Title: Virgin Media Irritation
Post by: Beaker on May 05, 2007, 18:52:19 PM
W**kers, 350Mb for the hours of 4pm - Midnight on my 2Mb, the 4Mb gets 750Mb, and the 20Mb gets 2Gb, then they half the speed (at least).  Now i dont torrent much so it shouldnt matter to me, but something about it makes my blood boil, might be because they didn;y bloody well inform us beforehand.  Im moving soon, and i think ill take business package when I do, at least i wont be limited on that!

:stupid: but as you say, the annoying thing is, that virgin must ring me once a month, and email me even more frequently, yet they didnt mention this?

hell no, that would be too easy.  Im kinda stuck with them as im moving in the next couple of months, but i think ill take a Business ADSL package when i get my broadband installed.  Demon most likely as they seem the one that is least hassle from my experiences at work.

Demon hassle free? Youve got to be kidding! Theyve been the company from hell since we started arranging line moves to our new building. Im sorry but a 40 day lead time is not good enough for an answer to a question!! :D

A lot of isps are doing this now - back in the days your average user might use 4gb a month, ppl do that in a day now wot with bittorrent and yootube n stuff.

On adsl youf be lucky to get much more than 2-3Mb between 4pm-midnight fwiw.

But it is not just illegal downloads these days, People can be classed as high end users just for using legit stuff.

Game patches are just massive and bigger all the time average for a game now for a large patch is say 300mb isnt it? with small ones being 30mb ish

Sky anytime and such you download your shows and movies now
You got radio
As you say youtube
You have the next versions of what youtube is - stage 6 with hd quality video and as that becomes the norm in you camera that will be the norm on the net
Trailers all offer hd versions
Games machines are online and you got pc online games - updates, media downloads, music downloads....

Websites themselves with more rich and larger size content, look at ajax concepts

So they need to make the net capable if thats what people are offering, rather then limit the users, but I suppose you can look at the data, if someone is using way over the top then maybe, the % they give is still quite small for that amount.

Yah, I was just saying for example. The bandwitdh costs money, so rather than isps whacking a few quid on subs they shape what theyve already got. Back in the days they could say unlimited cos most of their customers were only using http and email so it averaged out in their favour.

300mb is small fry to NTL downloads.
Im on the XL thats 20mb & I get capped everyday. 300mb download only takes 5mins. I can easily download 20gb in 12 hours. Prob nearer 30gb

I doubt if any average home person is dowloading 300mb patches every day.
Even watching you tube or a streaming movie, wont come anywhere near the data rates of someone maxing out a 20mb connection.

Im still with Bulldog (now Pipex owned) and im pretty sure im still on a totally unlimited service. I only get 4mb out of the max 8mb service but it sits at 400-500kb/s pretty much 24/7 and ive never had any complaints.
Was thinking of going to Virgin for the 20Mb but now with caps i guess its not worth it.  :(

My router is saying i have had 113Mb since 4pm.  Its locked down tighter than a ducks arsehole, and aparrently at 21:17 this evening i had the speed locked down to 1Mb.  it seems the limits they publish arent really what they are managing.  Group of tossers.

hmm, just trying to pull a Suse DVD down, and it appers they may have decided traffic shaping is a good idea as well.  Suse ISO was coming down at 40k, seemed low, updated trackers.  Still only 40k.  Added a Fedora Core ISO into the torrents and it dropped to 20kish each.

Can someone else on one of the limited exchanges test this?  if there is anyone who has had "Blazing fast 20Mb" enabled in their area.

I queued up 10gb at 8.45, went to work & was home 10.45
all downloaded happily

are you in one of the areas they have put the caps on though?

Im more than a little annoyed at Virgin now, ive taken the opinion that as im going to hit the limits anyway there is no point in trying to be a "good" user and im hitting the connection for everything I want.

worst case is that if youre on 10mb atm, youll get halved to 5mb.
For those on 20mb their cap is 10mb; big deal ?

Its basically like saying that youll get 20mb during off-peak times, with the connection *possibly* slowing to 10mb during peak times.

im on 2Mb though, because I personally have no need for anything faster.  so i get my speed dropped to 1Mb, what is the real kicker though is the slice of the upload speed to 128k, the download kill i wouldnt mind so much, the upload means that if we have 2 PCs on the net its like crawling through wet sand.

Wouldnt you have to be maxing out your 2mb for about 4 hours to hit 3gb ?

My brain is too frazzled to do the math atm but if thats the case and you are maxing it out that solid then I dont see how you can justify being on 2mb anyway.

Ive had my 20 1/2d to 10 & then the 10 1/2d to 5

AND theyve started blocking TCP25 which I am NOT happy about. My mail server conforms to all the RFCs yet I cant use it because I happen to get my Internet connection from the same people that some spammers do. G A Y.

How are you redirecting the MX and DNS records back to your NTL IP ? I didnt think it was possible because its DHCP ?
Title: Re:Virgin Media Irritation

The limit for the speed halving on 2Mbit is 350MB not 3GB Nimrod, so its still about 20min of full use.

Change ISP.... simple.

Im currently (after a long adsl hiatus of about 3 years) signed up with aaisp.net - no ports blocked, only a rather low bw cap during business hours, which if you are out at work during the day, doesnt hurt cos it turns into no cap from 6pm.

Also, how many ISPs do you know who will give you a set of IPs for nothing (I asked for a /29 and got a /29, but I bet you could ask for many more if you needed them).

oddy enough changing from one ISP to another sounds easy, however it isnt when all your stuff is cable not BT, and you are moving in a couple of months.  Ill put up with their crap for now, but im moving to Demon Business 2000 when I get the new place, Ill also have a 4Mb ADSL from work, but itll be monitored, so anything slightly grey wont be allowed on it.

I was with Blueyonder...since about a year ago DHCP leases were based on MAC address...so you always got the same IP aslong as you didnt change macs.

Before that I had my MX record point to a no-ip address rather than an IP. Now I use 3rd party services which does mail reflecting on a non-standard port and gives me a SMTP relay too.

service does seem to have got pretty poor under virgin. I was an old blueyonder customer, constantly hit my download maximum, 10mbit got 1.1mb/s, 4mbit got 490kb/s, downtime was pretty much a few hours every 6 months, i couldnt have wished for a better isp.

then along come virgin :D

and since they dropped 20Mb round here the service has SUCKED.  My pings get up to 800ms in the evening while just browsin.  Before they did the deployment it was usually around the 100ms mark, even at the busiest times.  According to Virgin/NTL support this isnt an issue!

I am with you on this one Beaker. Since Virgin took over and the throttling came in my line has fallen well below par. They havent rolled out the 20mb in my area as yet but I am on the 10mb. No matter what time of the day I cant get better than 200kbs where as with BY I would get 1100kbs.

It seems to me that the throttling isnt working as it should. I am on for no more than an hour or two a night when I get in to check emails play a few games and general browsing with the odd upgrade/game patch.

Virgin wont do a thing about it as the monkeys on the phones are just reading off scripts (Also notice from July 1st Virgin are going to charge you £1/min for this support line), they wont put you through to higher departments and its getting beyond a joke now. Game pings have jumped from sub 25ms to anything from 300 - 4000ms and this is on the same servers I have always played on.

Downloads from the BY/Virgin game file servers are no better either. Constant packet loss and ping spikes.

yeah, im stuck with them at the moment, but when i move i think ill go to Be Unlimited.  All my local exchanges have been unbundled by Be, Bulldog and Sky.  So i have choices at least.  Might even just opt for a 2Mb business line.
