Title: Vista Annoyance #1 - Read-Only Access
Post by: Jaitsu on June 26, 2007, 10:51:06 AM
deary me...

what did microsoft go and make an operating system that defaults all your personal files to read-only access, and even worse... lock them

okay well its not really that bad, in fact I lost a full head of a hair over the fact that itunes wouldnt transfer any of my new music (http://www.tekforums.co.uk/posts/list/8167.page) to my ipod

lets skip to a week later, Ive completely accepted the fact that I wont get any of my new (much loved) tracks onto my ipod despite having tried numerous 3rd party ipod song management apps

then the other night, something caught my eye when looking at the properties of an audio file in my music folder (where itunes stores ALL of your music ripped and/or purchased - for the non ipod users)... its access rights were set to READ ONLY, something I never looked at whilst playing around with permissions for specific user groups

I changed the access rights on ALL of the itunes music folders (by selecting the root folder and de-selecting the read only option - windows explorer then prompted me if I wanted these changes made to all folders, subfolders and files - i clicked yes) and began to attempt another ipod sync... half of the 63 songs waiting to be synced managed to make it over before the dreaded warning came up once again

I went back to the itunes root folder and clicked properties, noticing that the read-only selection was ticked again (basically resetting itself to prevent access)

I have since tried to change the access rights and quickly sync my ipod before they change back, but no avail... I have googled the issue numerous times, and have tried disabling UAC on Vista (I am running premium - doubt that makes a difference) but still the problem persists

There is a similar problem that ocurred with windows XP (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326549) and their workaround uses the attrib sytnax command in the command line, however this does not apply for vista... and I have tried to use the same command which is not recognised under the new regime of windows

Is it me? Or should I just be happy with windows choosing what I can and cant do on MY machine... deary me (Linux is not an option for me right now, or I would be hopskipping it over to that right now)

Any help/suggestions are appreciated

I just enabled the administrators account and use that

hmm this is weird in vista, the admin account is the one I am using, however I believe there is a hidden super-admin account that can be unlocked and accessed

if i do that however, I will lose all of my library (play counts, playlists etc)

Its just you unfortunately.  Vista does not set everything to read only.

Though it does sound like a user rights/ownership issue.

this does not make sense :s

all of my music files have the read only box filled (not ticked... dont know what the difference is??)

i have since got an attribute changer app and that now says everything is not read only... but still itunes gives me the same hassle
