Is there anything Im genuinely likely to miss in Ultimate if I buy Home Premium. Or at least anything worth the Ã,£45 odd price difference in the OEM versions?

Remote desktop and some network tools are only availiable in business or ultimate.

But then media centre is only availiable in home premium or ultimate.  Swings and roundabouts really for business/home premium, but if youre not fussed about offline files & folders etc then go for home premium.

This "bitlocker" drive encryption could be handy if youre paranoid. Other than that, not really any benefits... my advice: Buy premium, acronis true image and dont download any dodgy pr0n :D

Bit locker is the only real tool that I have noticed as usefull.  I have no use for it.

Quote from: BitTechYou can get software to use full-motion video as a desktop background. BitLocker encryption is included, as well as WinSAT, which claims to be a game performance tweaker

For those who dont know.  Bitlocker is...

Quote from: BitTechRather than security for your system, this is security for your data. BitLocker enables you to keep a hard disk volume on your machine permanently encrypted. You can drag and drop files on and off it, and open them from within the Locker, where they are decrypted on the fly. There are a couple of ways of doing this. To generate the key, you will need a Trusted Platform Module inside your machine, which generates a machine specific key which is used to encrypt the data. Should the drive be removed from the system, it will not unlock, since it will lack the key stored on the TPM.

Alternatively, you can encrypt the drive using a key generated by the software and stored on a USB key. The drive will not be readable without the USB key. This seems like a better idea, since it means that having a laptop stolen will not function. However, it does mean that, if you lose the USB key, you are stuffed.

BitLocker is a very, very welcome addition to Vista. Privacy is a growing concern amongst users, and laptop theft is a massive problem. A USB key as a decryption method is simple, yet somehow inescapably cool; James-Bond-Like. However, youll only get it on Business and Ultimate versions of Vista.

Yes get Bitlocker. I have because Im very concerned someone has access to my highly sensitive forum postings.

Thats pretty much the way my thinking was going too :)

Happy days, Ã,£45 saved and since Im now self employed I can claim the VAT back too :)

Having got fed up with Vista during the beta phase Im now becoming resigned to having to try again because Im going to have to deal with pcs over the next few years that have Vista installed... :?

Rivkid

As long as I do not need vista to do something I cannot do in XP why bother ?

Goblin

I prefer the media center front end in Vista :)

Its going well so far, I can see things and hear things and get on teh intarweb. INterface is lovely and fast, looks much nicer and more cohesive than the last beta I downloaded. Indexing is great and nicely integrated, I suspect hitting windows and typing what Im looking for will soon replace my normal well organised folder hierarchy.

Currently downloading FFDSHOW to get DivX etc working.

Will update with bad news when it comes :)
