I keep saying it more and more about vista and The rumour I mentioned before that there will be an xp of vista much like xp was to mellenium I really think there will be that or this "pro/gaming" or "performance" version which really has all the elements people like but the rest of the crap removed from vista and then them starting to slow down and pull the other versions.

End of year I bet you will here something along similar lines, really starting to believe that.
The rumours of the service pack are either it will be rushed out asap and beta is days away or it will not come till next year but either way if one is true another version or iteration of vista sounds very much on the cards.

erm, ME was an "improved" version of 98

xp was an "improved" version of 2000

i doubt there will be anything major, especially since the announcement of 7 the next version of windows within 3 years

Eggtastico

The next release (think it might be codename Fiji), is more likely to be an MCE version of Vista.
Which should offer support for Pika, Microsoft development to allow devices to easily connect to MCE with an embedded chipset. MS hope to have DVD players, TVs, etc. all with Pika/MCE support.

ME was the test base for many of the features of xp in terms of the home user and of which many were canned or vastly re-worked, a lot of people in the industry call vista me 2
I mean there is a few features in terms of performance that are missing from vista, Like a lot of software like firefox 3 for example have a light database driven system and it was planned for vista and was testing fast in demos when over layed onto a xp platform but pulled so that did not help it.
Vista has a lot of nice interface improvements by a mile and some cool stuff but far to many negatives.

Have you used vista yet?

yes, and since I agree with a lot of industry companies on the points, the fact that sli does not work properly etc and lots of other things, and the games I play preform worse under vista, its not great to get yet.

Lots of reports of people going back to vista, heck dell have had loads of computers returned and asked to have xp on instead and selling more xp then vista option packs.....

I can go on

People who buy Dells aint computer ethusiasts. They are probably the ones who use a computer at work & want a system to operate the same as that one.

Ive switched to Vista recently, I dont play any games on the PC as such anymore (though no problems with the ones ive tried) & I love all the bells & whistles it has over XP.

Industry companies complained when windows 98 came out.. the same again when w2k & XP came out, so its no suprise vista isnt like either, but comparing Vista to XP as ME was to 98 is laughable & the comparision must have been made by a halfwit whos barely  started shaving.

the bells and whistles are fine, its the rest of it that is the problem

To be fair, Vista does work, but large organisations wont move their systems to it because itll be too costly to upgrade all the older hardware at the same time.  XP will run useably on a P3 700, and while they can still get parts for them they wont upgrade them.

SteveF

Vistas fine tbh.  It was like ME when it launched but its turned out more like XP and got better and better as time goes on.  Im still using XP on most of my machines but Vista is better.  In another hardware upgrade the speed loss will be negligible and itll take over just as XP did with Win2K and 98SE.

ME was an unsalvagable disaster.  Vista isnt.

The high end Dell workstations and laptops are very good these days - using one right now :)

After aquiring alienware and a couple of others theyre pretty much up there in terms of the best home built systems.  Their laptops are pretty much untouchable.

Off topic I know but thought Id just mention it.

neXus

Well ms did fix the Sli issue which they quietly put out basically meaning it was vistas fault and not the graphics folk, lol
I still think a nice gaming edition with with some of the lessons earned is what the rumoured thing to be coming out next year, even if it names something and not directed at gaming it should be the well performing version.

Sam

I have vista on my dell Laptop and its fine.

Dave

Ive got a dell laptop from work and Im pretty happy with it (even though it did crash today for the first time)

as for vista - Ive not tried it yet but tbh.. almost any major bit of software is going to have bugs in it to start with - investing more money in testing just pushes up the costs and delays releases so companies do sometimes cut corners and development teams are often on tight deadlines

I didnt like XP much and vista is even worse. They are adding bells and whistles, but underneath its no better. Most will hardly use the additional features.

For people with legacy equipment it can still be a nightmare situation. The minimum system requirements are understated again too. Many upgrade only to be disappointed.

About the only one that does not have exploding batteries? ^^

Off topic, I am quite excited in getting my mac book pro at end of year
