i use mplayer (www.mplayerhq.hu) for most of my movie playing, I like not having a UI cluttering when running in window.

use VLC when working with soft subs, DVD iso/vobs, multi lang stuff.

I use VLC because it does everything I need it to do
Plays files & streams media both way.

If you know what your doing, you can do everything a Slingbox can do & more with VLC.

As both my Cable & Satellite boxes are based on Nutrino, using a VLC plugin, I can watch whats on Cable on my Sat box & vice versa.

Very handy...

Use BS Player for pretty much everything. Only switch to VLC on the rare occassion I have a codec issue. Its great for compatibility but I find the GUI a bit clumsy.

Recommend BS Player BTW - its great.

I use VLC or Xine, depending on the movie. Some play better in one than the other, never have been able to figure out why.

my cable & sat boxes run nutrino & have LAN - no TV input needed. VLC is used for the streaming. I could give you the DNS Details & you could watch the stream - but I wont, because Im childish
