Ive got a fairly old PC and bits have been dying off on me for the last 6months+
Each time something dies I replace it but Im now getting to the point where I just dont think its worth it anymore.
The spec:
Asus P5P800-VM mobo
Intel Pent. D 2.66 @ 3.33ghz
2GB Corsair DDR433 (4 * 512mb)
ATI X1950 256mb AGP GFX
2 * 320gb WD HDD (IDE)
18* DVDRW
In the past 6months Ive replaced the GFX and a HDD. Now the DVDRW is playing up.
I know that a new DVDRW will set me back less than £20 but is it time to let this beast go to a new home ??
Its not too bad a spec. I still run my Athlon 3000XP and its great. Give it some TLC Im sure its still got plenty of life in it. Whats it being used for?
It has become my business machine. I use it for software development and business administration (accounts).
I only put the X1950 in it as it didnt fit in my media center, the heatsink is about 1cm too tall. *sigh*.
I dont really want to get shot of it but at the sametime I dont want to keep leaking money into it. I just cannot decide where/when I should draw the line.
For a business machine the specs look more than generous.
Not sure why youd need more tbh.... and why youd need such a graphics card in there if it is just for business.
tbf, some of the software I develop is quite gfx/directx intensive. So I need a fairly weighty card for the purposes of load testing...
...thats my excuse and Im sticking to it ;)
looks to me like the bulk of the money is already invested TBH - swap the drive and there isnt a lot left to go wrong!

/me pictures tower case 2 stories high.....
Bigpockets have a pretty good specced machine for £240.
nothing wrong with that spec at all for a business machine
2 gig of ram will cope with most stuff
the cpu has enough grunt for visual studio etc
it would cost you 20 quid to replace the dvd, vs 500 for a new machine thats better but not by a huge amount unless you are heavily into media encoding/games playing
If lots of bits are dying off, try a good quality PSU, your current one (scuse the pun) might be sending spikes, or something.
Yeah youre spot on. I bought a new 500W PSU and took out the ancient 350W :o
I couldve sworn it had a 400-450W PSU in it but there we go.
