Title: Which Printer?
Post by: kev2006 on June 19, 2006, 07:36:15 AM
Hi Guys,

I used be on here ages ago with username kev2001 i thin it was but it seems ive been delated so some of you may remember me, some may not.

Ive currently got a Epson Styles 740 ink jet printer which i bought i think around 98 or 99.  Its been fine although now it doesnt wantto printer colour correctly, regardless of numerous attempts to clean heads etc etc, it prints black ok but colour isnt too great now.

Therefore, im looking to get a new printer, considering a colour laser printer now.  However, im unsure which ones to go with.  Im not too keen on Lexmark and ive heard Epsom are expensive on toners etc so I thought id go with HP and was looking at either the 2600n or the 3600n.  The 2600n gets good reviews just just looks a odd shape, the 3600n looks ok butit only has 600x600dpi, how comes?  My epson inkjet has umm 1440 i think.  how comes the laser printer has less dpi?

What colour laser would you recomend? I seem the HP 3600n for 370ish so preferably around the same price woudl be good.

many thanks for your help.

Kevin

Im not really up on printers, but Ive got a samsung 500cpl  (colour lazer)

I looked around before I bought it, and it gets good reviews... I like it, new toner cartriges are a bit expensive (about Ã,£200 for a full set) but they last forever, (I use min a LOT)

it has a built in duplexor too.... for double sided printing, you just click an option when you press print, and the pages come out already double sided :)
doesent sound like something youd use much... but when the option is there I use it all the time P:)

I know nothing about lasers but I just thought id add that I love my Epson R200 inkjet. Prints pretty photos prints onto printable CD/DVDs to make them look nice.

Cartridges < Ã,£2 each.

However I can see why you would want a lazer if you do a lot of printing, just something to consider!

People, its LASER :P "Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation "

We have numerous colour lasers dotted around the place I work. Theyre relatively fast, cheaper to run than the average inkjet and so far have been very reliable. They are excellent at producing professional documents with colour graphs and tables in being as they dont wrinkle the paper and they dont smudge either. However they are not as good as inkjets at printing photographs.

Dont go Lexmark, they weigh a tonne and imo the ui is a bit poo. HP are in my bad books for the sheer amount of doas we get at work, Epson I dunno about, brother seem pretty good (no doas at all), and I got a Sammy mono laser and its really good.

Normally the best idea is see what you fancy and then go hunt a review on google or yahoo.

Presently I have a Brother for B&W use and a Konica minolta 2400W for colour which works well but might turn out expensive in the long run, the colour carts are chipped.

Go for one that has plenty of alternative make replacement colour cartriges available.

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies.

I was interested int he Hp 3600n printer but i cant understand why the DPI is only 600x600?  ive seen other colour lasers at 1200x1200 or 1200x600 - how comes Hp is so low on DPI?

Does anyone have a hp 3600n printer at all? is it any good?  is the dpi on lasers any different to dpi on ink jet printers?  I have a epson styles 740i and thats umm 1440 dpi i think... so seems strange Hp colour laser is 600x600...

Thanks for assistance guys..

mine runs at 600x600 for normal printing (text/graphs/normal pictures)

but then I stick it on 1200x1200 for photos etc... and you can tell the difference in quality straight away :)

Beat idea is to email HP, explain the problem, and ask them to send you a sample printout. They should be willing to do it ;)

Hi All,

Thanks for replies - yeah, I might just do that - thanks Serious!.

Ive been looking at a different printer now - Epson C2600n, doesnt look too bad, its a bit deeper than the HP ones so need to measure to ensure ive got the room for it but i was wondering - does this printer hold ALl the toners i.e black and the colour ones? or do you need to keep swapping toners for what you want to print?  The demo video on epson site seems to indicate you remove and put in whatever toner you want to use which to be honest i dont thik i coudl be hassled with - id want all the toners int he pritner so it just printered whatever i sent to it...  Also the video clip seemsto indicate just inputting the toners into one place so what about the others???  bit confused here...  i think the video is actualyl wrong and is for the 2600 mono but theyare saying you can use it as colour if you remove the toner and put in the colour one.... but unsure...

Anyone have one of these pritners??  Ive tried lookign in manual but doesnt give clear picture of the toners int he printer etc..

Who woudl have thought buying a printer was soo much hassle hehe

Thanks

Kevin

Going by the description, you can either put in four black toners for extra black capacity or you can put in a CMYK kit for colour printing.

The speed of the colour printing is 7.5ppm instead of the 30ppm it can do in black. This means that the toners are mounted in a carousel which turns around for each colour. This slows the print process down and in my experience makes the printer more unreliable. The HP one has a straight paper path so although the black prints are slower, colour prints at the same speed and it has less to break.

We used to use a Epson 1900n printer in work.

Replaced it with a HP.

While the Epsons colour reproduction was better, nicer colours and a higher resolutions (lettering didnt appear to bleed as much as the HP if you get what I mean), the HP was a darn sight faster.

This is doing print runs of anything from 150-500 sheets whenever needed, which was often multiple times per night.

Epson used to clog the print queue up for quite a while, the HP churns through them, but the quality just isnt there. (Not sure what HP we have as I am not in work now and I dont recall the model number).

We have several HP colour laserjets at work, one of which is a 2600N, the rest being 3500/3550ns. Theyre not the fastest printers in the world but text printing is razor sharp, drawings like graphs and line drawings are excellent and photographs are adequate.

Theyre rock solid too. The first one we got has done more than 100,000 prints and aside from having to replace the consumables (it has had no downtime whatsoever.

Thats part of the issue. The text is "over sharp" on our HP.

And a smooth gradient of colour from white to deep blue while the epson did it seamlessly the HP prints it out and you can see dithering like you would get on a cheap LCD.

hmmm so the epson takes it takes .. interesting...

Do you have the HP 3600n by any chance or does anyone else?  That was my original choise but it seems the HP 3600n and the 2600n can onyl print at 600 x 600 - can you increase it via software to say 1200 dpi or 2400dpi ?

Many thanks for your help.
