I have a 360, I had a Wii, and I will have a PS3, I am by no way a fanboy of any manufacturer.
The 360 is a stunning piece of kit, until recently I had the HD-DVD add-on, its grand, but this is now on eBay (the HD-DVD bit! not the 360) suffering a similar fate to my Wii...
The 360 itself is superb, ive had it over a year and on my third now... through no fault of my own, shoddy Microsoft build quality im afraid. Now I hear so many people banding the all the 99% of people who havent had a problem keep quiet crap so much its beyond a joke, whatever people say, this system is not as rock solid as it really quite should be.
The Wii again was a lovely gadget, but its software library at the moment is just rubbish, no other word for it im afraid, I dont care about old gamecube games, if they where any good I would have had them already and played them. I will be re-buying a Wii in a few months when the price has gone down a little, and the software library has had chance to grow.
Now heres the PS3, what an overpriced console, I mean SERIOUSLY overpriced, people say or is it well yeah, it is!
Many argue that the in built blu-ray player eats up part of that expense, to some extent id agree that thats a valid argument.
What you get for your money right now probably isnt worth it, but when the price drops, it will be. Ok so Microsoft have a great online service (or so I hear, ive only had the silver) for years now, but sorry Microsoft im not paying you on top of a game price just to play online. Sony may be one or two steps behind Microsoft even with this extra year they have had to develop, but the fact they have free online play may just steal those cross platform titles away from a few 360 owners.
Heres where people might not like my views, I really think a huge selling point when the price goes down is the questionable security. Being positively encouraged to run a different OS by Sony in my books is suicide, if you can boot stuff from the HDD as certain videos show, certain people are going to have a party.
Extras - The PS3 is almost silent Oh and Casino Royale, dont expect to see that on HD-DVD anytime soon... oh and if you find yourself running short of space in a couple of years time, no doubt a 500GB 2.5" drive will be out for you to plonk in the back, all without voiding your warranty!
The PS3 wont leap straight to the number 1 spot, but I can see why it would in a couple of years time, despite stupid oversights like no rumble pads :?
nah, id rather play with my balls as its cheaper :P
Quote from: rednah, id rather play with my balls as its cheaper :P
Yeah, although its a big big shame you cant get someone to play 2 player with you.
Scamper along and litter someone elses thread please
Depends on so many factors really. What the next years worth of releases are like, what technical issues might occur, exactly what the prices drop to. Personally I think Xbox 360 will be the ultimate winner - I dont think Blue Ray will be that much of a deciding factor.
I think your forgetting that version 2 of the 360 is on the way, hardrive can be changed with the xbox as well.
Games wont look that much different even in 5 years time, people actually expecting that xbox 360 will look better as coders will have it cracked by then and still learning the ps3.
Sony are really kidding themselves with the concept of this lasting more then the average 5 years, when the other 2 or more bring out the next next gen machines sony will have to follow suite or seem old and out dated.
AS for Hi-def i read an article on Monday about the Xbox 360 drive and the people who made it actually since its software running on the drive not the 360 and the drive they have put in, it should be able to run with software updates other types of hd-dvd if and when they come out since most think a hybrid version will eventually win out.
It can also be used on your pcs as well now and they actually do not mind it just do not support it.
PS3 has some nice features, the 2nd os boot option is nice
TO much cost, to little games and very complex game development, Wii will take over the mass game spam in the market like the ps2 did, and 360 will make some quality games over the years

Yep its certainly hard to tell, but a while ago it looked like Sonys chances where really starting to dwindle, the launch dates a bit crap, but with that said theoretically by the time christmas is here the ps3 will have a very strong lineup of games for it, and one can only assume the price will have fallen a great deal.
I dont WANT blu-ray to win, as HD-DVD is region free :) but I wont be surprised if it does.

Yep some good points neXus, I dont see this lasting for 5 years, they can TRY but when Microsoft/Ninty bring out something before the ps4, its going to pan a 5 year old system into the floor pretty convincingly.
Im not sure MS are really making a great move with a 360mk2 its going to piss a LOT of people off, I think thats why they are hesistant to release anything official about its existence.
And yes I think the 360 will have the advantage for quite some time, but the PS3 DOES have potential, it depends how they use it, like you touched upon, its already been documented that the Cell processor can be a nightmare in comparison to coding for the 360.
Quote from: matt5cottIm not sure MS are really making a great move with a 360mk2 its going to piss a LOT of people off, I think thats why they are hesistant to release anything official about its existence.
I dont think its going to annoy people really. I mean its something console makers have done for a while now, Nintendo DS Lite, Slimline PS2, Megadrive 2 etc etc.
Those consoles havent added any more features, just gotten smaller.
I dont think the PS3 will win tbh, as it is too expensive and they have made a lot of mistakes so far to get here.
As for the online gaming. The online procedure for the PS2 was an absolute nightmare. Im happy to pay the ~Ã,£3 a month for the live service.
But its really not going to bother me who wins, as I have never found sony games to be much cop. For me its Sega/Ninty and now MS.
Athough, a thought crossed my mind. Has anyone seen how apparently easy it was to get backups running on the ps3? My guess is that sony have deliberatly made it easy so the console will gain rapid popularity only for them to fix it at the last minute. But the international sales seem to show the PS3 getting lagged on the shelves compared to the other consoles.

The 360 has definitely had a questionable track record when it comes to reliability. Plus as mentioned its far from quiet!
To a certain degree I think most people have come to expect this from 1st revision consoles regardless of manufacturer. Sales generally tend to climb steadily once quieter more reliable components make it on to the production line. Were starting to see that now with the introduction of a quiet DVD drive and the move to small die size. I
I dont think theyll market the newer revision (smaller die etc) any differently, afterall its just a manufacturing revision for them.
QuoteMany argue that the in built blu-ray player eats up part of that expense, to some extent id agree that thats a valid argument.
Personally I dont care about HD-DVD or BluRay - at this point in time theres more than enough storage capacity on a DVD-DL to store everything need for highly detailed games.
As far as movies go, I gave up on disk based storage ages ago, so Ill never have the need to play either format, especially through a console. With Media Centre Extender the 360 really adds something useful that I can use (quite a bit) now. For example my HTPC stays in my lounge, but I can move the 360 around to any room to watch shared content.
Its for this reason I dont like being forced to shell out for one or the other when purchasing what is primarily a games console.
QuoteWhat you get for your money right now probably isnt worth it, but when the price drops, it will be. Before I bought the 360 I was very wary of the so called "Live Gold" charge. I have to say my opinion on this has completely changed. MS has produced some fantastic online services, that very well laid out and easy to use.
On top of this theyre rolling out IPTV and a media marketplace. Also, I like the direction MS are going in to converge online arenas for Windows and 360 gamers.
I have been far from impressed with Sonys take on online gaming. I had high hopes for the PS3s implementation, but it isnt shapping up too well.

You can just see this potentially turning into a PSP hack chaos fiasco for Sony.... this will have major appeal.. but for a minority.
QuoteExtras - The PS3 is almost silent Oh and Casino Royale, dont expect to see that on HD-DVD anytime soon... oh and if you find yourself running short of space in a couple of years time, no doubt a 500GB 2.5" drive will be out for you to plonk in the back, all without voiding your warranty!

Im just amazed how theyve managed to bungle it so badly from a business perspective. At the very least theyve given MS a major foot up, when previously most considered them not to stand a chance in hell against the titan of 200m + PS2 sales.
The lack of rumble is such a huge step backwards, especially seeing how much the tech has matured - when youre immersed in the chaos onscreen the vibrations add a subliminal layer that draws you in further.
End of the day, its late, very expensive, difficult to program for (which pretty much puts it on par with 360 graphically - by the time they get used to it, MS will be very close to Xbox v3) and has a questionable online setup.
Dont get me wrong I want them to do better, the more competition at the top the better, but I really dont see them storming to 250m+ sales like they did with the PS2.
I got a 360 & Wii.. Not sure if Ill get a PS3 yet.
Ive given up on PC games these days.. apart from MMORPG or management sims/mouse driven, I find it easier to just boot up the box & play on there. Live Gold is well worth the extra fiver a month. Beating the computer in Sport games aint much fun.
As for the HD-DVD upograde, Im holding off atm. Yes its a cheap way to get HD-DVD, but whats the point when a format war is brewing? No games will be for the HD-DVD & Any HiDef stuff I want atm, I just download for a.b.hdtv or watch on sky.
Ive had a Wii for a week now. Its fun to play, but I think it will end up sitting on my shelf & used more when theres a group, rather than on your own - But it has Huge Potential. Bought Madden 07 yesterday & the Control system is really innovative. Its a Pity it relys on small movements atm - would be great if you actually had to mimic proper arm movement; for example, to Snap the Ball, you Bring your wrist back & then push it forward to throw... Would be better if you had to bring your arm back & throw forward (like a proper QB would) - Also in Madden, you Lift both hands up to catch the ball, much better than the xbox version where you just press Y button, etc. - You feel much more involved in the game.
Im really looking forward to a Star Wars Game :-D
I also wont be suprised if next time they bring out controllers that strap to your Legs to mimic running, or jumping, etc.
As for the PS3, Ive owned a PS1 & PS2 and was never really impressed with either. The only reason Id buy a PS3 is for the Blue-ray support if it wins the Format War.
QuoteAS for Hi-def i read an article on Monday about the Xbox 360 drive and the people who made it actually since its software running on the drive not the 360 and the drive they have put in, it should be able to run with software updates other types of hd-dvd if and when they come out since most think a hybrid version will eventually win out.
Not sure what Nexus is trying to say... But my interpritations is that it can be software updated to support Blueray.. - I would think thats wrong as its a different laser.. unless MS have sneaked the support in. Which I doubt as MS put their cards on the Table & backed HD-DVD from the off.. More chance in Bill Gates saying the internet will never take off
;)
As for reliability.. my xbox has crashed about 5 times in just over a year. My Wii once!
Well you know if blu-ray wins M$ can just happily release another external player to replace to HD-DVD one.

Good point ^^
Quote from: DoomsWell you know if blu-ray wins M$ can just happily release another external player to replace to HD-DVD one.
Cant see them doing that.
Afterall, the Support does nothing for the console gaming wise.. only to view movies. MS firmly backed HD-DVD, while Sony backed Blu-ray.. When as an american admitted they was wrong?

MS said a while ago that if HD-DVD failed and Blu-ray won the war theyd release a Blu-ray drive for the 360.
When my PS3 comes Ill let you all know which I prefer ;-)
I do think MS has gone for Games first above all and extras later. Wireless headsets, wireless(ish) wheel, HD-DVD drive. As Mallrat says, there is nothing stopping MS from doing a Bluray drive if its clear Bluray has won. They would do it just to prevent Sony from having a one-up on Xbox360. They have already done that twice, removed two feathers from Sonys Cap. Hi-Def movie playback and 1080p gaming.
Sony has clearly gone for the all-in-one entertainment experience. If anything, the PS3 is closer to being Xbox 2 while the 360 is Xbox 1.5 They have tried to include everything in the box. As with Xbox and PS2, PS2 could always be produced cheaper than MS could ever dream to produce the Xbox. This time the boot is on the other foot. From a price point of view MS could very easily price Sony out of the market. How much can Sony afford to lose per console? MS could easily do to Sony what Sony did to MS in the last gen.
If we look at the consoles from a gaming point of view, what killer apps does each console have? Unless you have a AAA title you will have to go multi-platform. And then even if you do have a AAA title, what stops you from releasing it multi-platform? *Cough* Oblivion *Cough*. We have seen a number of titles which have been initially announced as platform exclusive but have since been announced for the competition. Assassins Creed was originally announced for the PS3, then PC and then 360. Oblivion for PC and 360 and then PS3. The only games that will be exclusive in my opinion will be 1st party titles and a small number of titles which have been snapped up to exclusivity. Resistance:Fall of Man, Motorstorm, flOw, Heavenly Sword all spring to mind for the PS3.
Alot of people are going to get the PS3 simply because they had a PS2. That is what Sony is banking on. Cant blame them really as they were incredibly successful with the PS2. I read a very interesting (and long) article that went into the reasons for the failure of the Dreamcast. They put it partly down to Segas failure to make a large impact in the Japanese market, mainly comparing it to the PS1 sales at the time. PS1 greatly outsold the Dreamcast. The same thing has happened to the 360 in the various markets it has been launched in. It has been trumpetted a number of times when PS2 has been outsold by the 360 yet the situation is quickly restored a few weeks after. PS2 still outsells the 360. That is not just a concern for MS, its a concern for Sony. If the PS2 is selling so well, how do you grade the success of the PS3? How do you judge success and failure? If after 3 months the PS2 is still outselling the PS3 and 360... does that make them both a failure?
Also, HD-DVD uses a different laser to Bluray, it will be impossible for the HD-DVD addon for the 360 to play Bluray discs. Having said that, if there are any changes made to HD-DVD, ie extra layers added to increase capacity, it should merely require a software update to take advantage of these new discs.
Also, notice I have ignored the Wii. Its a law unto itself... :)
Also a side note regarding the noise. The 360s achiles heal is its DVD drive. Fortunately they appear to have fixed this (finally) with the new Benq drive. If I were to compare the PS3 and 360, I would say the PS3 has a superior design that makes better use of the case. Rumour was Sony had a difficult time squeezing the PS3 into its case. The 360 on the otherhand has lots of empty space in it. Compare the PS3 to the Xbox360.

PS3 has loads going for it, the only real drawback being the cost - and the fact that ms & nintendo have room to cut prices.
There were a LOT of revisions of the C64.
Did that hurt sales? Nope.
Id rather buy an Arcade Unit like a Naomi/NaomiII/Trigem than paying the cost of a PS3
sony may succeed, but it wont be down to their work
they have shot themselves in the foot so many times during the ps3 production
they had the formula great with the ps2, was enough for the hardcore gamers, but not too much to scare the casual gamers
ps3 is going too extreme, only hardcore gamers will pay for it, it is packed filled with so much that it will scare alot of people away when there are cheaper alternatives for the main casual gamer such as the 360 or the wii
Quote from: EggtasticoId rather buy an Arcade Unit like a Naomi/NaomiII/Trigem than paying the cost of a PS3
Ive an Atomiswave SD coming this month if that helps.
Anyway sounds like Sony managed to shift a fair few ps3s with the launch of GTA.
No sign of any xbox360 2s as mentioned in this thread, I think MS must be concentrating on keeping the price point low, a wise move.
I still think sony can do this, Metal Gear and Gran Turismo have both impressed me recently, about time to be honest.
GT5 Prologue is a bit of a joke to be honest. Its a band aid because its still going to be at least a year until we see the real GT5, and Sony has no decent car games out on the PS3.
I was half convinced Id pick up a PS3 when GT5 Prologue came out, Im that much of a fan of car games and the GT series to a degree, but once I actually had a go on it I was quite disappointed. It looks nice but besides that its got nothing else going for it right now. Online play is rubbish, the AI is rubbish and the fact it still lacks damage is the biggest joke of them all.
When you get down to it, it doesnt really look that much better than Forza 2, which has been out for quite a while now, has great damage effects and is a very in depth enjoyable game you can come back to, time and time again.
Bar a few titles being console specific more and more are cross platform now. I dont care about Bluray, I watch HD content by other means, I just care about gaming when I buy an Xbox or PS. Right now it seems like theres not much on the horizon, or its too far in the future, to really get me excited about getting a PS3.
My interest in the PS3 is growing, although Im not going to buy one until its at least half the price it is now. I wouldnt mind having a blast on Haze, and Resistance, but GT doesnt interest me anymore. I think Forza will prove to be the better game. Gears of war is better than Resistance and that leaves Haze. Bit much buying a console for one game.
All the good games are multi format anyway.
Ive got 2 360s and about to palm off my flashbanned one to my brother. Hes getting a 360 for his birthday and I think its going to be one of those unflashable benqs. He can have my flashed one and Ill have his new one. If my flashed one dies ill just give him another console. The arcades are cheap enough to be disposable like that. Its just a shame the DRM is such a pain in the assist.
However I agree that the PS3 will probably win this round too as they have the branding that all the "cool kids" want and all the gullible parents know the phrase "PlayStation" Itll be a close battle though, its going to make sony sit up and think "maybe this isnt going to be as easy as we thought" Basically they are in the same position that the classic console makers were in. Microsoft / Sony are the present day Sega / Nintendo and the other console brands are getting muscled out apart from Nintys blinding party pieces of getting consoles to people who dont normally play.
Quote from: soopahflyHes getting a 360 for his birthday and I think its going to be one of those unflashable benqs.
Piss, is there a new unflashable BenQ? :( I have one flashed at 5x and its much much quieter than my old tosh-sammy
Comments above about GT5, tbh I thought it was brilliant at first, then it became a bit of a chore tbh, it all felt very very familiar but the online play and visuals are spot on for me 8-)

same here.. the price have come right down.. also my phone contract is up in a month or so.. maybe time to look for one of those "free gift" options
are you having a giraffe about sony having done well with the cooling and layout? its bigger than a breeze block they had sh*t loads of space.
Im having ps3 thoughts too, but tbh its too big & ugly for me right now I saw one under a tv and it was an eyesore. If they came out with a mini version Id buy one, definitely.
There was a news article that the PS3 had overtaken the 360 in European sales, probably because of the ditching of HD-DVD on the 360
gah!
just returned to the land of the living after buying Haze at 10:40pm on Friday evening and sitting up with my buddy drinking and having a blast on the ps3 since then. just completed the game on easy setting, will give my eyes a break before trying the next level up.
its my first go at a 1st person shooter as i wasnt that keen on them previously, but its a decent game and with the online side of it all its got miles of interest left
got propper 1000 mile stare/tunnel vision after playing that game.
anyone else had a blast at Haze yet?
Ive got it, got to the observatory but cant find the way in. Any hints?
Also, PS3 seems to have the edge over MS through the free online multi. OK, its crap, but its free and it works. And if the software developers crack the potential the PS3ll steam over anything else...if...
Quote from: El JackoAlso, PS3 seems to have the edge over MS through the free online multi. OK, its crap, but its free and it works.
Strongly disagree - Id say MS have wiped the floor with Sony in this area. Xbox live is ridiculously better than the PS3 online to the point that its barely comparable. Ok its £40.00 but lets face it thats f**k all really for a whole year (think about it - dont go out for a meal or have a night off the beers ONCE in a 12 month period and its paid for) , personally Im more than happy to pay that for the excellent and far superior service it provides.
meh
I hate to admit it, but i am hopelessly biased towards the PS3. Dont try and talk me out of it, I dont have a reason, I just prefer Sony.
Now does anyone know how to get into the observatory in Haze?
