A lot of those points are true over here as well as trans-atlantic, the bottom line is the cinema is getting too expensive and the quality of films is getting less and less for the most part. Unless I can get a deal or its a big film I won't bother with going to the cinema these days. It would maybe be different if a Cineworld card was still a viable option for me.
ive not been to the cinema in years... which is a shame, as I really love popcorn.

4 friends here going to the movies is $60 dollars just for the tickets alone for a non 3D movie. 3D is more.
If you want drinks etc then it just adds up. We use Film Vouchers and offers where possible but when you include the drive to the cinema etc as well it is just pricey.
These people and Music industry companies all blame piracy for just about every people count and money loss they notice when in Fact it is these companies being their own worst enemy. It is their lack of care for the people who watch, listen and buy their media and understanding just where things are.
Netflix for example, Anyone using it in the UK yet? I hope it comes here at some point in 2011. I would be happy to pay for that!
All people want is a great experience and the convenience of something at a great quality.
Take on demand stuff as well - Quality is crap here for example for a show you want to watch you missed on TV and on their website. Even hosted in the same city the Channel 1 stuff here seems slow. I could torrent the same show at a higher quality they offer and have it sooner.
As more people (which I doubt but hey, go with the use case here) buy a 3D TV in their home they will wait to rent the 3D Blu Ray to watch it in the comfort of their own home.
It just irriates the hell out of me how slow these big companies are on the uptake of the net, what content and how to offer it etc.
I don't go to the cinema anymore either.
It's too expensive, full of chavs throwing stuff, talking loudly and mobile phones ringing.
I didn't build a home cinema for it to go to waste. I can watch whatever films I want when I want and pause it when I want a wee.
Saw the new sherlock holmes at the cinema.
Arrived late on an Orange wednesday so was 2nd row from the front.
The benefit was that when undoubtedly some cock decided to text or check their phone, it didn't ruin it as they were all behind me. The cons, well, so close to what was quite an action film meant it was pretty boring during the action sequences as everything was so close you couldn't follow.
End verdict - watch at home so there are no cocks to ruin the film and you can sit as close or far away from the screen as you like.
Plus you can have a beer or four! :ptu:
This is always why I go to my local City Screen rather than a multiplex. You can enjoy a martini or three, they kick the annoying chavs out, the sound and picture quality is the best I've seen outside of an Imax, the place is always clean and tidy and the prices haven't gone up in the past few years so it's now on par with a normal cinema visit and works out much cheaper if you take out a membership.
I can't praise the place enough, it's really rekindled a love of going to the cinema
There's an arthouse cinema in Southampton I could go to that has a better audience, comfy chairs, good screens and a bar, but it's too far to go often and because it's arthouse they are a bit pricy and don't have the latest blockbusters, mostly indie films. Though I did manage to see Moon there and it was a great experience.
You guys would love the cinema's here and the overall attitude people have towards going to them. Still same crap in terms of expense etc mind but least its a great experience and sitting in standard seats which are like what had for only premium back when last went to movies in UK.
I've been to the cinema about 40 times in the last 6months and I have to say that out of them about 5 of them have been half decent and 2 of those where re-releases. That is why revenue is falling, because nearly all films are crap.
Make a good original film and people will go an watch it, its not a difficult concept. Avatar and inception are perfect examples. Harry potter 22 and all these half baked big budget reboots and hero films are also perfect examples of the problem.
Slightly OT, I just got in from watching Girl with the dragon tattoo and that is up there in my top 3, brilliant film.
^^^
exactly, I go to the cinema pretty much every week, and 95% of the films are crap
I only go because it's literally 3 min away from my house and I never have anything to do on a Sunday night
don't know what I went to see tonight... something about ice hockey... it must have been based on a true story... it could have been a really good film... but kept missing the ball (had half decent actors in it too) it was just warming up when the screen went black and it ended... (pretty much everyone in the cinima looked at each other with a WTF? look on there face)

The trailer they showed for it before Sherlock was probably one of the worst trailers I've ever seen. Mind you I don't know whether that was again due to being so close to the screen. It was one of those montage jobbies cutting scene every half sec in time with music. Near the end it started flashing up words and they were so big you could only read half the word before it cut again ><

thats another problem with the industry. the trailers very rarely match up with the films. i agrre the trailer for dragon tattoo is terrible that is why i have only just watched it.
