Would it be possible to get a 90% reliable wifi connection 80metres away in another house?
What gear would I need?
probably a decent YAGI. 80mtrs is doable, but that YAGI would need to be externally mounted, as will the receiving YAGI. To make things easier you could go parabola... less finicky on lining up.
Id have, a transmitting access point... yagi... yagi...recieving access point...wireless to cover whole of other house.
Is it necessary to use wireless? do you have a clear line of sight from house to house? if so have you considered optical methods?
Optical? Ya we got a clear los.
Regular Tp cable should go up to 100 meter, would be the safest and most reliable IMHO.

Cheapest too :)
Optical systems cost mucho dosho. Things like infra-red laser systems. Unis and large businesses have them, didnt really comprehend "house" just saw "houses" "80mtr", and assumed large business.
Actually if you have some money to burn, appears this isnt a new problem :) been solved in the past.
Have a look at the products here, at least it gives you some model names to google for.

something like: http://www.ecmnetworks.com/shop/item.asp?itemid=121&catid=33 looks perfect. 500mtr range.
Pricey though! http://www.iviewcameras.co.uk/IV_ZYXEL_G5100CCTVSystemsdeals.htm
Cheers guys, nuff to think about now :)
Optical would be sweet but it seems the prices are if you have to ask...
Cat5 would easy do the distance. Best option IMO. Fibres pointless, get gig switches and Cat6, to get gigabit speed, surely thatd be fast enough.
Wireless would be slowwwww, and would drop when it rained probably (a problem I have).
The cat5 would have to cross a road and 2 gardens..
High up, together with a roap or a wire ?

Thats a shame - I have an 80m CAT5 link to my friends house and its really really good. 80m though is not going to be a problem if youve got clear LOS. Check out products by Artem - they have have some great bridging products that arent that expensive or you could use 2 x D-Link 7100APs in bridging mode. Done this solution for hundreds of clients across europe with this exact kit and its always been fine. Its all in the aerial and 80m wont be that bad.
