Title: Windows 7 - Networking problem?
Post by: XEntity on February 14, 2010, 12:01:59 PM
Hi All,

Right have finally put W7 on my laptop, my GF has W7 on hers, and I have a media centre in the bedroom with XP.

My GFs computer can connect to my laptop shares (Which are setup as "Everyone" read/write no home group or what ever its called setup)

However my XP machine cant even ping my laptop, and cant see the shares, firewall disabled under the 3 firewall profiles in W7.

Does anyone have any idea??

Normally Im pretty good at sorting these issues, but not having used W7 properly its got me stumped!

Just to add, my w7 laptop can see and transfer the files to the xp machine just not the other way round!

I think that disabling IPV6 on w7 fixed it.

IPV6 looks a little daunting! Need to learn about this and the advantages over IPV4.

Edit: Actually might be the access point! might put 6 back on and have a play later in the week, but the Mrs might get grumpy if I continue on this issue today!

I tried all sorts with W7 and Vista getting to see each other including the Ipv6 thing, nothing worked. The second I changed the wireless card in my computer though networking works like a dream. (it was an old netgear pci card that wasnt supported on Vista)

OK a different issue now, and TBH W7 networking is wearing thin on me already!!!

I have shared a folder, given "Everyone" full access, the permissions are set to be passed to folders, sub folders and files, and from an XP machine and a W7 machine only some of the files are visible in the share, others are just not there!!

So there can be 10 files in a folder but for some reason 5 could not be visible on the share, with no pattern to which!

WTF is going on! At the moment this is sucking balls!

Cheers

Jake

Continued looking at this last night, and it appears that it is the NTFS security information has gone all screwy, and is looking for the old user from before I re-installed, so going to copy the infor off to another HD re-format the drive and copy back as need to sort out the partioning anyway. That should then resolve my second issue. The first issue Im going to drop in my other router between the ADSL router and the network, so just use that as the modem, which I wanted to do anyway as running DD-WRT on my other non DSL router, and want the advanced logging etc it gives me, so hopefully by later tonight I should be all sorted!

Also noticed that my 802.11N wireless is only connecting at 130MBits, and should be 400 in 5Ghz, so need to look at the drivers there also...

Dunno, but I was about to pull out the screenshot card, showing my driveshares as administrative shares.
