Get your 32bit version here (http://download.windowsvista.com/dl/preview/beta2/en/x86/iso/vista_5384.4.060518-1455_winmain_beta2_x86fre_client-LB2CFRE_EN_DVD.iso) or 64bit version here (http://download.windowsvista.com/dl/preview/beta2/en/x64/iso/vista_5384.4.060518-1455_winmain_beta2_x64fre_client-LB2CxFRE_EN_DVD.iso) and get your beta key by following instructions here (http://bartysblog.be/content/get-your-windows-vista-beta-2-keys-early).

Dont bother with X64 versions.
Its signed drivers only, and very little support out of the box.  The 32bit one is the one to go for.

to be honest... all I did was visit the vista webpage. select my country and download. login to my partner account and it went "ello mr hicks" and gave me the details. lol

Just tried downloading that and it came up 3200MB while downloading and 758 once done. It them refused to write in Nero claiming the block size may be wrong.

Last link for the keys says server not found :(

Well, if the downloaded file is only 758MB, that would be why. The 32 bit version of the Beta is around 3.2GB as previously stated.

Youre better off using the Akamai download manager tbh, that at least checks it against a hash to help make sure the download is uncorrupted.

Your better off getting it from a torrent.

I suspect its been Firefox in some way :/

Im having a go through the Akamai, seems to be giving adequate performance so far and I can leave it running

Quote from: Ubuntu Forums3) Okey if thats working, lets move on to getting Vista downloaded. This is a big file(3gb + )

First go here and download either 32bit or 64bit version. ( I only Tested it with 32bit).

Download Page
http://download.windowsvista.com/preview/beta2/en/x86/download.htm?

As a lot of people want to try this "new" OS, I found that its almost impossible to get access to the downloads. So while I was there, I graped the direct links.

(the board for some reason shortens the link. If you use wget, it should be the full link address) (Using wget will work even though microsoft says "We are currently experiencing a high level of demand bla bla bla")
32Bit Version
http://download.windowsvista.com/dl/preview/beta2/en/x86/iso/vista_5384.4.060518-1455_winmain_beta2_x86fre_client-LB2CFRE_EN_DVD.iso
Code:

wget http://download.windowsvista.com/dl/...FRE_EN_DVD.iso

64Bit Version
http://download.windowsvista.com/dl/preview/beta2/en/x64/iso/vista_5384.4.060518-1455_winmain_beta2_x64fre_client-LB2CxFRE_EN_DVD.iso
Code:

wget http://download.windowsvista.com/dl/...FRE_EN_DVD.iso

Thats how I got it, except I used a GUI front end, to Wget

Left it going while I was at work, not sure how long it took but I didnt much care!

Serious, can you merge threads using jForums? - I didnt see this Vista thread, but now its been bumped back into life, I dont see the point of having my thread there too!

Thanks :)

Unfortunately J forums are totally naff in that department :(

Just had the downloader go off with an unrecoverable failure and have had to start downloading from scratch again...

I wonder if there is a torrent?

I could add myself to the seeders, I still have the .iso on my disk.

Well, Ive used it on & off all day.

I have to say, I am not looking forward to supporting it, its user-friendlyness makes things more complicated than they should be!

Downloading requires patience... but I have to say I think its worth it.

(Decided to get office 2007 beta at the same time)

A friend of mine has a copy running quite well.  Didnt have to much trouble with the drivers except for sound & wireless dongle afaik.

I played with it for about 5 minutes.  First impressions, very graphical, very customisable, for example from the classic windows menu & graphics right through to the Vista theme/menu/graphics.

It is a total memory whore idling at 500MB.  However there are less running processes in the background.

Analysts have suggested it could have been done more efficiently and in a lot less space.

Im back to XP today, after my USB mouse for no apparent reason stopped working.

Cubase and my guitar tuner programs wouldnt work (anything that needed the soundcard seemed to die).

It was all rather sudden I was enjoying vista. I will be buying it when its released, just the lack of software and drivers at the moment drives me wild.

I downloaded this at work (In about 50 minutes) and have been running on my work laptop as member of a mixed mode domain for about a week, so far the only issue has been Checkpoint NGX secure remote hasnt worked, and the CAG (Citrix access gateway) VPN client has been unresponsive.

Still, I wont be switching from BSD just yet..

WinFS gets the axe (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/06/24/2047214)

oh dear, what will Vista actually come with I wonder that was originally promised....

Good debate and discussion in the slashdot thread there too with pro / against MS opinions.

WinFS was never going to be part of VISTA since er.. well last year sometime :) What sucks however is that they were going to release it also as an update for server 2k3 and winxp and vista but unfortunately it looks not to be happening at all now. at least until the new MSDE thing finally comes out of beta (ado.net).

Grrr... was looking forward to it :D

ok, found something i do actually like.  A fully working version of DOS rather than the castrated one ive had to put up with since W2k. :D

i know its a Beta, but bloody hell is it bloated.  Playing a couple of games earlier it was lagging like hell, then i noticed i could actually hear my drives.  The array was giving it death to keep up.  When im forced into an upgrade im buying the most basic one that will allow me to use the PC and play games on (Linux doesnt play games well despite the arguments from people it does).  on my rig its chewing 662Mb of page file and 650Mb of RAM at idle!
Ive done all the basic tweaks of turning all the effects off and it looks exactly like a W2k install.

Right summary :
Loading Times are Up
Boot Time is about Double
Opening a New application is test of patience
when using "Run As..." for applications and entering the username and password i want to do it once, not once every time the command triggers something.  If ive triggered a command yes i am sure i want to do it, and no i dont want asking if i want to use whatever application has been triggered because IVE ALREADY F*#%!NG GIVEN MY CREDENTIALS!
This is going to be an absolute nightmare for support.

I have it installed on 6 of the most basic laptops at work and it runs quickly and well with no issues and no mad memory useage - theyre latitude d510s with 512MB ram and theyre used by the consultants - if anything there has been less hassle with it than XP

if this is anywhere NEAR the finished product then it sucks.  I threw Tib Sun on as an older game thatll run on almost anything.  It stutters like buggery. Max Payne refused to install, meanwhile FarCry was impossible to use.

Ive set my rig up how i expect "normal" home users to have it because ill have to support those in more depth than the people at work.  However im expecting some serious bitching when i explain the 2.4Ghz Celeron they bought cant run this with all the bells and whistles.
