Title: Wired/Wireless Network
Post by: soopahfly on July 24, 2006, 09:35:28 AM
Were just about to set up our wireless network in our new house, and Ive set up the access point (Netgear WG602) where the router will be (DG834).
Ive wandered round the house with my dads laptop, and found that we get good signal in 3 of the bedrooms, but none in two of them.  My Sitting room being about half way on the signal meter.

We get signal everywhere downstairs bar the dining room.  The access point will be sat next to the front door downstairs.

In my sitting room upstairs, I have my Xbox and PC on a wired network, with a 5 port switch.

The other PCs will have wireless cards.

Whats the best way of connecting this all together without running wires all over the house?

If we bought a Netgear MIMO Router, would we need specific MIMO Cards to take advantage of it, also if we bought another access point, could we use the existing one to make my little LAN in my room wireless?

I really dont know what im looking for.  Im going to try different wireless base station locations before I go ahead and get anything else.  What I definatly need to do is get the little lan in my room to be wirelessly accessible, and also get signal to everywhere upstairs.

I do hot know how good the trnsmitters are but the type that use your electrical wiring as signal line could be a solution for upstairs and any other place in the house with an electrical outlet but with  bad signal by air.

I think were going to hit it like this.

Were going to upgrade the DG834/WG602 combo to a single DG834PN (Mimo) Router, Use the WG602 as an access point to enable my mini LAN to wireless and hopefully also use it as a repeater to boost the signal through into my brothers room.  In his room, we shall install some sort of wireless card in his PC.

Just bought a pair of 9db omni direction aerials, see if that makes a difference.

My dads ordered 8mb BT Broadband with Home Hub, so hopefully one aerial can go on my WG602 and one on a WIFI Card in the back of my brothers PC.
