Title: Xbox 360 Elite
Post by: Eggtastico on March 20, 2007, 18:55:44 PM
http://www.engadget.com/2007/03/20/xbox-360-elite-new-black-limited-edition-xbox-with-hdmi-and-120gb-drive

# he Elite will be limited quantities only; that may be as much or as little as a couple hundred thousand.
# The case, controller, and Live headset will all be black. It will have all new packaging.
# Elite will cost $479, and will be a 3rd SKU; it will be sold alongside Premium and Core packs.
# Eventually Elite hardware (in white plastics) will take the role of the Xbox Premium. That is to say, after the Elite is launched and sold out, future Xbox Premiums will have 120GB / HDMI.
# We do not yet know exactly when 120GB / HDMI will become the standard for Premium, but it is loosely estimated to be late summer or fall.
# Elite models run cooler than normal 360s, but they are not yet confirmed to have 65nm chips.
# Prices may remain the same with the 120GB / HDMI hardware upgrade in the Premium Xbox, but we may still see a price cut on the line when 65nm chips start shipping.
# The HD DVD drive will not be internal or bundled -- Microsoft never did or nor does not currently have plans to put an HD DVD drive in the 360.
# There are no current plans to integrate WiFi into the Elite or future Premiums (although that can always change).

very good move. good price too, around £250, makes it £370ish with hddvd. still over £50 cheaper than ps3.

spot on there! why pay for somthing when it is probably a year until it will be anywhere near established as a film format.

dont think ive seen any shops selling hddvds, and cant see any games needing it anytime soon.

I think I will wait for this release then, Ive allready got a HD-DVD player/recorded downstairs so no real need for the £50 add-on.

BluRay is going to get absolutely nothing just like UMDs!

Id be suprised if Blu-ray misses out TBH.

Its the Perfect Anti Piracy for a Start
Computers get HD-DVD & movie studios get Blue-Ray

The extra sales from hard to pirate, will easily offset the higher production expense.

I would guess one thing Electronic Manufacturers do want to do is drive a wedge between Computing/gaming & Movie Watching.

IMO Blue-Ray has the bigger & better groups backing it than HD-DVD does.

Its also worth remembering that the price is quoted in $. The PS3 is just $20 more & you get a next Gen Movie player for that as well ;-D

The HDMI is no suprise, we knew that was in the pipeworks from the spy shots.  I think this has made my mind up about the 360 for me.  Been thinking about a premium pack for some time now.

both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray have been opened up, check that doom9 or the makers of Any DVD seeing as theyve made a HD-dvd / bluray version now.

anyhow, ooo black xbox... pretty, may have to replace the current one with it, heh.

Im well aware that both encryptions have been hacked open for quite a while.  I got tons of hidef stuff here.

but if BlueRay was only for Movies & Consoles &  HD-DVD for Computers, It would put a huge dent in your average Joe Pirating stuff.

BluRay has been cracked, itll be wide open by the end of the year at the very latest.  If they do decide to change the central key then all it will do is give the DVD Copy folks at places like Doom9 another target, and i gather itll mean they can then break anything.  If a 3rd central key is generated they are guaranteed to break it to the point its completely useless.  Reason being is that people who have bought the early players are not going to accept not being able to buy newer films, so the new keys would need to be compatible with the older keys.

If there was no BlueRay Drives for PCs - IE they was restricted for Entertainment machines only, Then it would stump your Average Joe Downloader

They are already on the way

Xbox and MS will win win with this tbh, Better features bit cleaner, better chips and only a little more then premium now and tbh the external hd drive is a good thing because it is portable you could whip it out take it around your m8es or what ever and wath a movie via their pc or xbox360 rather then the whole thing

Weve got a couple spy shots hot off the production line in China of the Xbox 360 Elite. They were taken with a cellphone so the shots arent of the highest quality, but they get the job done. The site hosting the thread is TGFCer, which stands for "TV Game Fans Club", and according to our tipster, is one of the biggest Chinese bbs for video game enthusiasts. A later shot was provided of the top of the hard drive, and you can barely make out the "12" in "120G HDD" due to over exposure, but with some Photoshop wizardry (Command+I, or Control+I for PC users) we were able to get the text to become more apparent. More pictures (including aforementioned inverted color shot) after the break.

Those cables look interesting and answer quite a few questions people have had about how the audio would work alongside HDMI.

From those pictures it looks like you have the HDMI cable for video and then the standard VGA output for purely stereo/optical audio out.
I wonder whether there is any audio on the HDMI output, I for one would be a little pissed if I had to use 2 cables to my receiver when 1 wouldve done. But then having HDMI video is better than not.

I wonder if there will be any sort of audio-sync settings in the 360 ? That is the one area I have had problems with when using HDMI and optical from my DVD player.
The HDMI goes straight into the TV with the audio going via my receiver. This introduces (at worst) a 3-5ms lip-sync delay. I can compensate for this on the receiver but those who are HDMI->TV, Optical->AMP may well be screwed !

I thought HDMI carried audio as well?
Title: Xbox 360 Elite
Post by: Mardoni on March 28, 2007, 14:12:56 PM
Its does but in some (my) case, my receiver doesnt take HDMI and my TV doesnt output a digital audio feed. As a result I use HDMI for video (TV) and optical for audio (receiver).

I wouldve thought that there are quite a few people in this position; at least those who use a stand-alone amp for their HT audio. They will want the HDMI direct to TV with seperate optical for audio (which appears to be supported looking at those cables) but how will they cope with lipsync issues ?

I think they just by the sounds of it just gave you every option in case one thing does not work out more then it being a fiddle due to limitations.

If this sells for £350 then Im more tempted to buy a PS3 instead. The cheapest PS3 in the UK is selling for £399 or less, with Blu-Ray its even more tempting.
But the Elite has bigger hard drive and a solid online service. :?

The separate hard drive is a joke, its too expensive, if you look online for a equivalent its much cheaper.

Actually no, its doing very well, It not only works in the 360 but also works on any 360 as well as pc use as well so you have a hd player for your pc as well as a result and seems to perform very well from reviews.

HD will win the hd disk war as well becuase it is cheaper now and can get cheaper faster and blue ray is just expensive all round.

He said hard disk, not HD drive ;)

and I agree with both of you atm.

The HDD is too expensive for what it is but there are ways to use a generic HDD instead of a M$ one.

The HD-DVD drive is at a great price point if you want to get into HD Movies without spending $$$ on a player :)
