hello all, so I have my xp and media player 11 and my xbox in a network
I have added folders and files in media player and on sharing I can see my the 360 and selected allow for the sharing and leave media player open.
When I GO to the xbox though it can not see the pc.
All network subnet mask etc is all fine and I am on live with it fine but cant get media off my pc and I do not know where to enter this code thing.
Anyone done this who can take me through it please?
The Code thing is for the Media Centre only isnt it?
I got Vista running & just Launch media centre & it gives me the Extender code which I input into the Xbox 360

I can now see my xbox from my pc media player 11
If I click "computer" in say music or video or pictures and it can not find a computer
Network details are correct as I mentioned
Did some ports just in case as well and no joy
iirc you need XP MCE or vista premium up for sharing of media and using PCs codecs
other wise there is a patch that lets you connect to computer available on MS but IIRC it only shares files, so if the xbox cant play the file it cant borrow the codec/stream it from the PC

Funny that since xbox site says you can and talks about how media player 11 has the mce built in and gives you the guide and faq on how to do it :)

I can share music and video from XP pro (trying to remember how I did it).
First of all this is not for Windows Media Centre Extender (you need Vista/MCE for that). This is just for going to the Media Blade, selecting Music or something, and finding your files.
Im pretty sure when I opened media player wih my xbox turned on, it said it had found media player, and asked if I wanted to install it as a device. I said yes, and it asked me some library questions, what I wanted to share and what not.
You said you can see the xbox from media player (which suggests youve done the last bit i mentioned) but can your xbox see your pc?
Im thinking firewall/network problem? (possibly a 64bit problem, although i doubt it).
Im gunna go play xbox for a bit now, so ill take a look at my settings and see if theres something ive forgot.
ok two things I thought of:
1) have you gone into the computers section of the settings blade? Thats how I added my computer
2) In windows Media Player, go to the sharing options and make sure youre sharing files (you have to share to be detected by the xbox). On the sharing screens you Allow your xbox.
That should be it.
Punk is definately right on this one. You can share your stuff without MCE2005, although for it to act as a true Media Extender you will need MCE2005. Personally, I think you should upgrade as its a really worthy purchase. You can use Transcode to stream your xvids to it.
Not sure what your issues are though

The exact reason im running 32 vista and not 64, i had the same random annoyances.
MRT any chance of links/guide on how to do transcoding? Last time I tried a program it bluescreened my laptop, had to format:(

I had a look at them, while they do work they can brick your system since you do need a shizzle one to cope..
I think I will get Vista before the year is out and get the 32bit version rather then 64
You can get the full home now online for £45 ^^ I plan to get 2 hardrives one for me and one for parent backup use before we move
To stream your video, you have to be using MCE2005 or VMC. You will need the 360 software from Microsoft to install into MCE. You will also need an application called Transcode or Transcode 360, if you google the site I think you will find it and it has a whole guide on how to set it up. If you get stuck give me a shout. Links are on pc at home.

If that doesnt work, then Id suggest installing TVersity on your PC and using that to share the media with the 360.
Nimrod thanks but gone through that, if you read my post it just seems to be some form of 64bit machine issue since it worked straight the way on my 32bit machine in another room
Well I found a work around if you have more then one pc in a network, Have the shared folders and just use the 32bit machine as the player and select folders in the network to share in the library of media player 11 and it will read the files on this 64bit machine from the 360 through the 32bit machine.
Have no clue as to why it wont work on this, still 64bit while cool not full supported even still in some things :(

FWIW, I use TVersity on my Win2k server to stream MP3 and WMV to my 360. In addition TVersity will transcode any non-native media to WMV/WMA on the fly (assuming your hardware is up to it).
Basically the 360 can use an uPNP Media server as its source.
Another odd thing though
My dell 22inch widescreen for my pc I got a hd to dvi cable and I can run the dash, hd video downloads and hd stuff from network AND play all my games top whack and it all looks really good BUT when I try and run a dvd or hd xbox logo only with a message of "hdcp not compliant" or something
Sucks and could not get any decent info about it off google, This mean they not allow me to play movies off this screen or is it a setting as in resolution I need to set it to?

While games and all is fine the Dell 2005FPW does not have HDCP.
HDCP seems to be a scrambler and descrambler thing to protect movies, Scrambled from the HDMI out on the elite and you need the descrambler in your dvi or HDMI in.
So the solution for me is to apparently(which I have done already) is to get an adapter to plug my hdmi to dvi cable into the vga port of the lcd and it will work fine at 720p
So fingers crossed, Will let you know if it works ok.

yup let us know, im on vga atm but was actually looking at new monitors to use hdmi/dvi

hdmi to dvi cable with vga adapter does not work on my lcd or my tv lcd - no picture at all
What I have learnt is that as I mentioned you need a hdcp compliant LCD to be able to view the video even if I plug the hd dvd into my pc using the hack and my quite old lcd tv also has no support.
So if my xbox is in my room I cant play hd stuff unless i get a new tv or dell lcd which are hdcp support to recode the scrambled signall

Since we got a 720p in the back room and a samsung 1080p on the way I think Ill keep things as they are for now and maybe pick up a new dell lcd in the future when I have worked a bit in new zealand. Someone has already offered to receive stuff like this in the uk and pass it on if it works out cheaper then buying in NZ
Im pretty sure the sammy 265bw and the lg l226 or whatever also support HDCP.
My dell does, but I think theres still some funny things - like it will only support 1080i over component and only 1080p over dvi. or vice versa. i cant remember.
