What next after the forums?
- Me and nige got some thoughts on other tweaks and additions to the forums in time and I may create banners for people.
- Features like @yourname linking to your profile in posts and a "mentions" link so you can see threads that have mentioned you
I have been thinking (and since it has come up a few times) we look to build some form of new tech news site. For me the only one that I like using and reading is engadget. The Gawker media sites have just gone terrible. When you see a HUGE add taking up most of the article space and you can barley use the site - Just stupid.
A tech site you can not compete with the news and probably no one will have the true time to write article guides on a site.. BUT..
If there was a frank report on the latest tech thing or news, say the Ipad2 where one of us wrote the thoughts...
-Things like how Steve Jobs talked bollucks on certain things, misquoting Samsung, saying the ipad 2 will be the first duel core tablet to ship etc...
- Seen to many sites also get their facts a bit wrong, the BBC site is terrible so point an article out by them and clearing up the real facts and just frank opinions.
- Doing some silly tech related stuff
- Maybe look to get hardware for review, anyone buying new tech to write a review.
What I was think of a stand out is that the folk from here we make threads and link to the forums for discussion rather then true comments and maybe have cross reactions of news and reviews. What I mean is not just have one review of a product, If I just got something and reviewed it and so did Nige and after a chat on who wanted to write articles and both have different opinions both have them on the same website.
It would be interesting to have a site that has different views so positives and negatives come out. People like to see what they may find if they had something. NO device is perfect and everyone is different.
In terms of news you could have an article with the run down news and then in the layout have "Nige's thoughts", "Liams thoughts" on the same news. Come at all angles rather then just the one you get from current tech news sites.
Name of this site is easy - Tekmonkeys, Some crazy sillyness has to come in and nice videos at some point and see how it takes off. A Section for "stupid monkeys" or Tech work pranks or something would be funny.
Hope that makes sense, Coming at it from a different angle, different opinions on the same site to cover the angles and rather then comments link to the forums and if people want to comment they can join the forums. Making strangers make the effort to have to make an account and post on the forums should remove the spam and troll aspects of comments today.
This would need a fresh modern design and consider the new and original format for things and would need a lot of people here to be on board. Would not see this kicking off work until towards the end of the year either but I think it is an idea.
I really would love to see a site where Iphone 5 comes out and that is posted and then 5 of us say "I think....". Of course people who do not like apple need to avoid the "Oh god, not another apple product" and be more of the "Why do apple still not include, this is why i personally hate their products" to work mind, but think it would look cool.
As a side note was hoping to get the gaming site bacon etc were doing but I got frustrated with the server and who had access to it messing it up and reseting work I did a few times. Sorry guys, cant just keep redoing things when you doing things to help make something good just in your free time.
