Ã,£4 a game or whatever it is roughly, for 10 minutes.
Now theres a con. I hope Hollywood Bowl goes bust.
After what I spent last night I agree.
The 2nd kick to the groin while you visit their premises is the extortionate drinks prices. A regular diet Pepsi for Ã,£1.25 (equivalent to Maccy Ds small). Disgusting. Get bent Hollywood Bowl. Mansize it!!
A lot of those places are the same though. Cinemas too.
Nah, there is a fairly reasonably priced one in Rotherham, at least I think it is, they arnt all the same.
Hollywood Bowl seem to think they can get away with charging more because they have flashing neon crap everywhere and dance music videos playing constantly. Id rather pay less and just have the alley, thanks.
Is that where we went at the last Samcrasher?! That was a bit lame that place.
Jaimz
Indeed. Terrible lanes aswell.
On a monday night at my local lakside bowling I pay just under Ã,£1.25 per game plus Ã,£1 shoe hire. Thats the cheapest time.
Quote from: SeriousA lot of those places are the same though. Cinemas too.
Odeon, Ã,£6 :?
My sorta local, and very "Big Lebowski-esque" bowling joint has closed. :(

I would have f**ked you in the ass Saturday. I f**k you in the ass next Wednesday instead. Wooo! You got a date Wednesday, baby!
mmm, think its Ã,£3 pp a game here, but on a Monday night its Ã,£10 for all night or something like that :o
anyway... sam thinks anything that involves him spending money is a rip off, its only when your giving him your money its good value :p
It allways tastes better when it is free. :-)
Hollywood Bowl > Superbowl 2000 in Rotherham and it only last ten minutes if you go on your own. Its worth that extra pound to avoid going anywhere near Kimberworth.
The place i used to work at had a decent deal
Ã,£5 for all day bowling 11am-5pm Mon-Fri
good value, they hoped to make the money back with drinks
The problem is, proper professional bowling alleys cost a hell of alot for the upkeep of the machines and the lanes. As the one I was working at did. (Now closed down due to massive debts, couldnt make a profit)
I was shocked at how bad most bowling alley lanes are, mostly due to the lack of decently trained bowling alley mechanics and not enough money put into the upkeep. It is the only way to make a profit unless you are packing them in from opening till closing.
The uk doesnt have enough professional bowlers
Quote from: CypherIt allways tastes better when it is free. :-)
Heres some arsenic then ;)
/sarcasm...
They all only last ten minutes - thats how long you spend on the lane individually. Total scam. Cost me Ã,£18 for me and the good lady to 3 games this weekend. Ã,£9 a head for three games - that was their supposed special price! We were gone within an hour. Scamola. Big time.
I dont mind paying any money if I think Im getting value; I bought us dinner costing well over fifty British greenbacks that same eve.

Bowling is better in large groups, same price, same amount of bowling, but you spend alot more time watching and chatting.
Only deals worth doing with bowling is the time based not game based.
I have enough bowling for a good 20 years though, working as a bowling mechanic i had to "test" machines alot
:D :D :D
Superbowl in Rotherham used to be Ã,£6.00 all day, we loved it. I even had a membership at one stage...
Then Hollywood bowl opened, and ive only been to Superbowl once since as Its such a dive.
Admittedly its expensive, but weve always gone when theres about 10 of us, and at Ã,£8.00 for two games, its a laugh and lasts about 2 hours.
Most stuff is expensive the only things that dont seem to rise in price is wages.
Quote from: ViniMost stuff is expensive the only things that dont seem to rise in price is wages.
Yes, just yes.
Doing a highly skilled/dangerous job as a pinsetter mechanic mixed with handyman/bar man/manager for Ã,£4.95/hr was a joke
Quote from: JaimzIs that where we went at the last Samcrasher?! That was a bit lame that place.
Jaimz
nope its a different place - hollywood bowl is in sheffields don valley entertainment centre thingie - also houses the once fantastic "club wow" - used to be a free bus there free entry and one pound a pint on a monday night + free bus back to sheffield - sometimes theyd have a special offer and do cheap drinks at 50p a pint! (though this was back in 1999) - it has turned from a once fantastic student venue to a local inbred sheffield chav sh*t hole on a par with mingdom night club in the city centre
On a night time Hollywood bowl seems to be full of chav kids who got IDd trying to get into the club.

only coz i beat you all. muahhahahhahahahah!
^^ yeah but who kicked your ass after the beer festivle a few weeks back ?
meeeeeee :p
(the 2nd game didn;t count becuase i won on overall score, because im so pretty)
My dad goes bowling at Newcastle bowl and they know me so I can get either cheap or free bowling, depending on business of it :D:D :P
Quote from: ViniHollywood Bowl > Superbowl 2000 in Rotherham and it only last ten minutes if you go on your own. Its worth that extra pound to avoid going anywhere near Kimberworth.
You get 10 minutes bowling regardless of how many you go with. If you went with 200 people you just spend longer waiting for your go but youre still only getting 10 minutes of bowling action.
Would you pay Ã,£5 to see a film that was 10 minutes long but interspersed with lots of breaks so you could chat to your mates.
All Im saying is for Ã,£/hr entertainments is a total rip off.
And the Superbowl is good value on Mon / Weds night with its all night bowling for Ã,£7 or Ã,£8, and it is a bit of a dive but I dont care, Hollywood bowl is just full of kids and dance machines and loud music.
Quote from: SamWould you pay Ã,£5 to see a film that was 10 minutes long but interspersed with lots of breaks so you could chat to your mates.
Probably :o
lol but its more than 10minutes.
A game of snooker isnt split into periods of time. Bowling is exactly the same :)
I think Ã,£9.50 an hour for pool however is bloody expensive in my current bowling place in Caerphilly,
As that normally equates to 1 and a half games with my mates and me, factor in buying pints and chit chat, 1 hour doesnt give you much value for your money.
Bowling is paying for a context in which to consume beer, tbh.
Since when has drinking beer ever needed a context? Brummie is proof of that
well it saves having to think up ramdon topics for debate down the pub such as which is the gayest animal the panda or the sea horse? or which is cooler a badger or a penguin
Quote from: Davewell it saves having to think up ramdon topics for debate down the pub such as which is the gayest animal the panda or the sea horse? or which is cooler a badger or a penguin
You do that?
Mustnt have many pretty women there then.
tbh its only really a rip off if the bowling ally is raking it in or there wasting all the money they get on crap, if your just covering costs plus a modest profit, you can;t really complain.
Ive never found anywhere cheap to bowl
In regards to what Sweenster said earlier about working in a bowling alley, heres a quote from a Kegel guy (Kegel are a large supplier of lane machines, oils, cleaners, etc.) about the qualifications to be a laneman, 2006:
QuoteNeed to fully understand ball reaction, requires a degree in Physics.
Need to fully understand oils and cleaners, requires a degree in Chemistry.
Need to understand what the bowlers want, requires a degree in Psychology.
Need to be able to maintain equipment, requires a degree in Electrical & Mechanical Engineering.
Need to do this with almost no budget, requires a degree in Business.
Must be diplomatic, requires a degree in Political Science.
Must be able to fend off angry bowlers, requires a black belt in karate.
And after all this education...
he gets paid $6 dollars/hour...
after all, a bowling lane is just a floor
and thats just a janitors job!
To do it right for a professional bowling level you need to know a lot, or have everything setup by someone that has a clue.
Anyway, prices. We pay somewhere between Ã,£5.60 and Ã,£13.60 per hour at my local alley, depending on time of day (largest in Denmark :o). Put two people on a lane they can play about 3 games without hurrying, thats between Ã,£0.93 and Ã,£2.27 per game per player.
Cheapest being Saturday morning /sunday evening, most expensive being Friday/Saturday evening, with all the fancy light stuff. Hourly price is Ã,£7.72 for normal evenings.
Bowling is an expensive sport/activity, but Im guessing its the only way they can keep all the crap running that needs to run to provide quality lanes. No way in hell Id ever pay Ã,£4 a game though.
a bit random, but whilst on this kind of topic. what else is there to do at night when you go out?
ice skating sucks - full of the same chav kids you find at hollywood bowl but younger and more per square inch.
hollywood bowl - weve established is expensive, full of chav kids.. (yet its quite good with loads of you, enough to fill 2 lanes so your not with chav kids next to you)
what else do you and your partners do?
the only thing i can think of (within monetry reason < Ã,£10pp) which we havent done yet but kept saying we will, is the Dogs at owlerton.
Normally its just down the pub for a slow couple drinks. Never done the dogs but keep meaning to, ment to be a laugh.
Bowling, Pool Hall, Ice Skating (havent done it in AGES), cant think of anything else atm
wondered when siniak would raise his bowling head into this topic
:D :D :D
This will get a response from a certain Moderator ;)
But having a student card can be an advantage due to a recent game of bowling I participated in for 2 games for Ã,£4 including shoe hire which i thought was not a bad deal!
dogs sucks ass tbh :( beena few times, theres a big dog track about 5min away from my house.
might be ok with the right company and if your sloshed tho ?
then again im not ven competetive with stuff like that, could take it or leave it.
We go out to eat, the cinema, rarely down the pub/club.
You cant go out all the time as it costs too much. :( I think we spend most of the time out in the day at the weekends, looking around shops or daytripping rather than spending it all in the evenings.
For once i wasnt on about u lol, who is the one who has issues about students ;)

Well I love films so I go to the cinema at least twice a week (Ã,£11 per month with cinema card).
And when you get old like me you like to go to the pub for a quiet drink or the quiz. Luckily the Lock Keeper near me doesnt play loud music, and has no chavs and does excellent food.

Well we can, I have nothing against studentism, I think anyone who is a student is having a great time and good luck to them I loved it. I just get arsey when students say they work hard (if youre working less than 40 hours a week 48 weeks a year youre doing less than a job so youre not working hard are you - 20 hours a week for half a year is a doss) and have no money (ge a job then like everyone else has to).
Quote from: SamAnd when you get old like me you like to go to the pub for a quiet drink or the quiz. Luckily the Lock Keeper near me doesnt play loud music, and has no chavs and does excellent food.
Ill second both those points :-)
the thing with students is, they somehow think there hard done to... maybe its just all the mammys boys getting doped up and whining having a bad effect on the rest ?
when I was at uni, I was a full time student, worked full time, and still had time to go get sloshed 3 or 4 nights a week.
(guess i did have a bit of an advantage with flexible working hours tho)
Quote from: SteveFOn this forum, its between Sam and Dave... :) Cant cope from getting arsey about students at any given opportunity :P
Nah I was a student once & used my discount vouchers/NUS card/yellow card etc.. to the full - what I took issue with was people saying that uni was essential for people to get on in life/get a good career/start working in the city etc... when I know people without degrees who are doing rather well regardless.
I just cant stand the arrogant student types who automatically assume that because they are doing XYZ course then they will automatically get a certain job when they leave.
E.g. I did software engineering and knew someone who studied "business studies" & he used to come out with crap like he might work in IT too but obviously hed be going in as a "manager" due to his course etc.. - erm yeah of course you will son - your doing a degree that is basically there for people to thick to do economics & you think some software company is going to stick you in charge of a development team because youve read a bit about business and have written a few essays. Honestly some of these people actually have too much of a self important view about themselves.

Cat bowling is cheaper and much more fun.

Me too, a lot of places play music so loud you cant hear anyone talk.

but can be dangerous if the cat decides to go for the hurty bits. I prefer human head bowling...
Quote from: SeriousMe too, a lot of places play music so loud you cant hear anyone talk.
get yourself down to the spoons then
cheap beer & no loud music
except usually its so busy u cant hear urself talk anyway!
on a night out i usually just goto pub with mates or something along those lines
where i live there is absolutely f**k all in terms of entertainment, no cinema, no bowling, absolutely bugger all, and i cant be arsed to drive 20 miles to goto either of em
was a while since my last visit to the lockkeeper, but ended up there on sunday of last. shame the weather was crap.
