Can the corner of the pipe (on the left) be cut and a smaller one re-attached so that the pipe can be moved flush with the ceiling?
you mean, you want to shorten the vertical part of the pipe, to move the horizontal part up flush with the floor above ?
yes, you just need to cut a bit out of the vertical bit and then rejoin the two ends together
it'll be about a million times easier to do if you can get to it from above.... otherwise you won't have much room to work in
actually, you could use a (decent) push fit connector and it'll be easy, you'll only need enough room to get a pipe cutter up and cut the pipe
your pipe looks 22mm from the photo

don't cut too close to the bend, you need a nice straight bit for the fittings to seal
Yes that's what I want to do. I was going to cut the corner and fit a new corner but what you said is much more sensible. The pipes are smaller than appear in the picture. I don't think they're 22mm but I'll check.
What's a push fit do, I just push the pipe in from both sides and it locks ?
Ok opening up the thread to question 2. The 2 smaller pipes in the picture are capped so they are probably old radiator pipes or something. I want to remove them. So I think I need to just cut them near the corner and cap them off again.
Anyone any suggestions on what the best cap is ?

Those are the kind of things I've used extensively in my DIY and seen them used plenty of times on sites I've worked on. Perfectly good.
So are all pipes 15mm or 22m then ?

push fit won't work on imperial pipe... you could use compression, but then you need the space to get spanners in
I've only every used push fit fittings once before, I used the copper ones figuring they were higher quality,,, but the plastic are probably just as good
but yes... you just cut the pipe nice and straight (use a pipe cutter) and then push the fittings on, they push in about 15mm at each end

The house was built prior to 1775 but we don't have an exact date. So lets say 1775. I'll measure the pipes tomorrow.
I'm exposing the joists in the hallway. I've pulled down the old artex ceiling that covered them. I need to move some pipes up flush to the ceiling, then I can put a drop ceiling in between the joists. The pipes are too low at the moment. Other than that it's pretty straightforward I think. I'll have to tidy up the edges of the walls where now there's more visible, not sure what to do there yet.

The hallway, which is what I'm doing now, actually used to be part of the lounge in the original plan, so the hallway and lounge share the same main beam. So it should be possible to make it look just like the lounge (with maybe a different paint finish).
If you want to come down and help you can Alan, appreciate that and it would be useful to have an expert on hand, but I don't want you to come down and do it all for me. I'm enjoying learnings something, plus my missus thinks I'm useless so I'd like to be able to say, not so sh*t am I.
