Title: Financial Cities
Post by: chrisdicko on September 05, 2007, 22:15:23 PM
What is the second largest financial city in the UK?

London is obviously first, but which one would be 2nd??

The reason why I ask is........on the weekend my mate said Leeds was. He said this as his old tutor said so.......so, just for that I argued with him, just to be an arse TBH. But he was sure it was. I just wouldnt agree with anything he said so he had to leave the argument!! Which city is actually the 2nd biggest after london??

Leeds!

Probably Brum or Manchester. Leeds is a craphole and not of the size/economic merit to be considered.

Well to be honest in my argument I said all them three cities! Didnt have a clue what I was on about, but those ones seem quite obvious to be honest!

Is there any sites with details on?

Its going to depend on definition really.

In the world rich list from 2005 its London then Brum then Mancester then Leeds.

in terms of number of financial institutions its leeds.

there are lots of uk majors who have big centres there, RBOS have a massive spot, HBOS too...

in terms of amount of money, i dunno.

Leeds is probably right tbh.

Go into Leeds city centre and youll see a huge number of bank and investment capital buildings.  The same isnt true of Birmingham, Manchester etc.

Oh Id definitely have argued and any self respecting gentleman would have been on your side.

He was of course probably right but it is your duty and privilidge to prove him wrong. :)

If you did it on how much financial traffic goes through banks in each city itll be Manchester or Biringham.  Their branch traffic will be way higher than Leeds just from population.  Birmingham has a very dense banking sector around some steps in the middle (forgot what its called).

Manchester seems has most of the banks call centres.  Whenever Im there I always bump into someone who works for something like Barclays debt recovery call centre or similar.

Edinburgh. One the biggest in Europe after London never mind the UK. Home to the worlds 8th largest bank RBS.

Edinburgh is correct - (tis where capitalism was invented afterall)

Basically youve got London,  then there is Edinburgh 2nd and Glasgow 3rd

QuoteThe economy is dominated by the Service sector, particularly financial and business services - Edinburgh is the UKs second and Europes sixth largest financial centre.

also the second most prosperous behind London:

Liverpool is the least prosperous (not really a surprise tbh...)

however what is surprising is how Glasgow has improved over the past decade or so:
