Title: Generals
Post by: Pete on November 04, 2012, 22:26:23 PM
Have we ever discussed any Generals in General Discussion?

Any thoughts on General MacArthur?

MacArthur remains a controversial and enigmatic figure. He has been portrayed as a reactionary figure, although he was in many respects ahead of his time. He championed a progressive approach to the reconstruction of Japanese society, arguing that all occupations ultimately ended badly for the occupier and the occupied. He was often out of step with his contemporaries, such as in 1941 when he contended that Nazi Germany could not defeat the Soviet Union, when he argued that North Korea and China were no mere Soviet puppets, and throughout his career in his insistence that the future lay in the Far East.

I was always a fan of Custer until he became a prat at Little Bighorn.

I know he wasn't a "full" general, but he still counts.

It remains my favourite Command and Conquer game, although to be fair I haven't played anything that has come out since

there's a fan server you can run on for online play now... only played with my nephew (think we'd get owned against another human) but it brings back awesome memories :-)

Red Alert 2 does have some awesome multi-player memories associated with it from when my mates at Uni and I discovered that it was available for £5 from our local Game. We all bought copies and a fantastic time was had by all. I remember one especially bloody battle which culminated in my battered but still driving Ore Harvester (my last unit) crushing my opponent's last trooper under its tracks. That was satisfying.

Generals had better AI for single player though, it didn't just keep throwing tanks at your base down the same track, it would learn from its mistakes and come around the back, or co-ordinate its Super Weapon shot with a ground offensive. I'm tempted to go install it now actually...

I Prefer General Motors, General Electric, General Election...

Oh wrong kind of General. Mostly they have been self-promoting, overt liars and most of all lucky. George Washington particularly so having been an English officer against the French and Indians before leading the new American army. He wasn't a particularly good general but was good at lying to and misleading the enemy. 'I cannot tell a lie'? bollocks!
