Edit by Dave - Someone edited the first post in this thread to contain a link about the books contents - though that really is missing the point of this thread
Id better explain- the thread title was chosen specifically to illustrate the point I was making but was not a description of the contents of the thread itself - It was not the intention to actually discuss the book or the plot within this thread so the wikipedia link is a bit nonsensical as far as the original thread is concerned
my original post in this thread had nothing to do with the book contents specifically and was actually simply raising a point about consistency in the moderation of the forums.
I just questioned why harry potter spoilers werent allowed to be posted when it has never been an issue in the past providing the thread is correctly labeled - thus the reason for that thread title - (this post however got edited in the weekend troubles to something rude)
Who cares, its harry potter ffs.
Cheers
Tongy
What is the ending?

pretty much tbh...
I just cant stand posts getting deleted/threads being locked when there is no point in doing so
Weve not had a troll on the forums for ages - maybe some mods are being as bit trigger happy as a result

*spoiler*
he hits puberty, shags around, decides he cant be arsed with it all and gets a job at MBNA.

Corrected.

Quote from: SeriousPlease do not put spoilers directly into this or any other thread as they are going to be removed if considered important to the plot.
Read it! All it says is dont put spoilers directly in a thread. I never mentioned links from other sources. Unfortunately Dave, doing his Don Quixoats act, charged the windmill. Once he did that I had little choice but to follow up.
Had he, or anyone else, asked at any point politely I would have unlocked this thread.
Had he, or anyone else, spotted his mistake then I would have been sunk.
Trouble is there are people on here who dont read my post properly.
/Serious finds himself guilty of double standards... :P
Who the hell is Don Quixoat?
Quote from: Chris HWho the hell is Don Quixoat?
Intentional misspelling of Don Quixote. If you still dont know google or something.

I know who Don Quixote is. I just had no idea who or what Don Quixoat was. But I appreciate you taking the time to clarify that for me.

for people who didnt actually see my original first post in this thread I think Id better just clarify that I didnt post any spoilers in any thread - my first post in this thread simply questioned why spoilers werent allowed in any thread when there has never previously been a problem in the past?
All I was asking was what is so special about harry potter that makes it so different to, for example, this thread:
http://www.tekforums.co.uk/posts/list/4431.pagesomething which has still not really been made clear... Are all spoilers now banned from tekforums or is it just harry potter spoilers that cant be posted directly in *any* thread?
Spoilers are definitely not banned AFAIK although Clockd may have other ideas than me. Really unlinked spoilers is one area that we should clear up as its impossible to hide them in this software.
Film spoilers threads are quite common and people who are looking at threads should assume that they might contain spoilers. A spoiler should not give the ending though as people may read a thread with the idea of going to watch a film. Usually people carefully word them so they are not clear to those who havent seen the film.
The problem is that the local forum moderators have to examine every thread in their forum that has a new post, which causes problems if they have recorded something and want to watch it later.
BTW Dave sorry about the trick I played. It seemed funny at the time, at least to me. Well I couldnt disappoint you, could I? :whoops:

no probs - I didnt click the link as Ive not read the book yet myself - just thought Id clarify the original purpose of this thread.

Im assuming youve not read the book yet either? ;)
I can see your point ref: how this may be an issue but surely you dont *have* to read every single post - Im a member of a couple of other forums with rather large established communities - tis impossible to moderate by reading everything so a lot of reliance is placed on the users to report posts to mods & this works just as well as no regular users on any forums tollerate spam artists or trolls. It would certainly work if you simply avioded reading spoiler threads you didnt want to read.
I reckon you can safely assume that any correctly titled film/book/tv spoiler thread isnt going to contain an advert for viagra or a 419 scam and any flame war that errupts between some users most probably would get reported so it shouldnt really be much of an issue - there isnt much risk of anything going wrong simply because youve not read the occasional thread that contains spoilers for a film/book youve not read/seen yet.

I do read every post on the forums, it isnt that difficult, most days there arent that many.
And I have spotted some of advertising posts within a thread. I dont include the ones from the BBC in that either. Even with the option to hide spoilers it still might be a problem.
QuoteIm assuming youve not read the book yet either? ;)
I have a set of LOTR books, they are far too boring and dated for me to get more than half way through the first one. My father would have loved them though!
I was left a couple of first edition Harry Potter books by my mother, Ive never read either and Im not going to read this one. I just dont like the style. Dont know why but most childrens books seem too closely shepherded towards the conclusion, as if pushed. There can only ever be one outcome.
OK Hermione turning out to be a lesbo and doing off with Rons sister for a life of S&M was a surprise but, whatever rocks her boat.
I have read Terry Pratchetts childrens books, I would recommend them to anyone. Only you can save Mankind has one of the best plot twists ever. Its never quite believable if you know about computers, but that doesnt matter at all, at least not for me.

that was kind of my point - i.e. on other forums where there are too many to read the members still report trolls/spam pretty quickly - thus the odd spoiler thread that you really really dont want to read shouldnt pose much of a problem. Especially since you read all the other posts on all the other threads.
They dont here though, they just heckle the poster to death!
Some help here? What are these;
Death Eaters (bad dudes? Human?)
whorecrutches (sp) (parts of the bad dudes soul in objects? Why?)
Dementors (Ghosts?)
The stag and the otter (Did Harry leave his stag behind to cover their retreat? Is the stag invincible or something?)
Snape - an (ex?)teacher turned to the dark side?
House Elf - does this dude obey anyone or only his master?
Can we have a spoiler thread proper?
