Plus as we all know there is a big difference to being able to do it if its in front of you and being able to do the steps from memory to write it down.

I think one of the basic questions for the job I'm doing at the moment was list two ways to access the event viewer (plus a follow-on question) but I sat there going through it in my mind going "Right click computer... Properties... wait, is it manage, no its properties... ah crap now I'm confusing myself"

I've never understood those types of questions - they don't achieve anything. You're absolutely right - its totally different to sticking a laptop in front of you and saying "fix this"

I hate that stuff, I can do it without thinking when something is in front of me or coding. If my boss asks me so he can do something I have to really think and it is hard.
When your in auto drive stages and just do, not think and you know its right and works etc it hard to actually think of the steps your taking to do it.

I had to do one of these last week, got a little nervy as it's the first time I've had to do it and I got some easy questions wrong.

Raid 0, 1 and 5, what are their names and functions.
Arp, Rarp, DHCP, What are their full names and what do they do.

D'oh!  I left the interview and instantly realised I'd cocked up.

Yeah this is my problem - I know my stuff but just a little nervy. It's a pretty perfect job for me (hours, location, small firm etc..) and the money is about abother 4.5k on what I earn now. I have no issues at interviews talking, answering questions etc.. so I just really don't want to blow it on an unknown! Sure it'll be fine tho - thanks guys!
Well I've been asked back tomorrow for a "chat" about the role :D

congrats.. I remember when I was a pup, I went for an interview at a top IT company, I didnt get the role but was asked back for a chat.
I genuinely thought it was that they was going to tell my why I didnt get the role, so didnt bother. They was offering good money at the time, as well as relocation fee.

I bet lots of places get a lot of idiots applying for IT roles, most now ask for IT Certs, when all they really want is someone capable of doing the job with a can-do attitude.

soopahfly

I'm hardly a pup, I've been doing this for 15 years this october. When I was younger I wasn't one for exams, failing miserably at school, dropping college etc, but when I got older my focus was paying for the wife's exams. Mine never really entered into it. I predict a rapid rise :D

Just pour some ice water inside your underpants, that will cure the problem, temporarily at least  :muttley: :nana:

And stop taking the viagra  :P

Gratz if you have a new job though!  :D

What's the rough ball park figure you guys expect to earn? Doing IT based work. I'm looking at a change of direction from my current job, as an electrician, to something either IT related or more technically challenging, this current electrician rubbish is getting me down.

Also, what kind of qualifications are the minimum to get your foot in the door? I've heard mentions of CCNA but have no idea what that would entail and how much it costs.

Leon

Hmmm I've seen and taken jobs for all price ranges.

Personal experiance in London seems to be something like:
1st Line - 17k-22k
2nd Line - 20k-30k
3rd/4th Line - 24K+ (Skys the limit!).

I really does depend on the company. I've seen companies looks like MCSE/CCNA/3rd Line guys offering £7p/h and other companies looking for a 1st line phone money but offering £25p/h.

I was lucky and fell into my 1st IT job at 18 doing 2nd Line at Science Museum in London for 24K. Left after 2 years and paid for MCSE 2003 myself to help me get my foot in the door when moving over to contracting. These days it doens't mean so much on my CV but I'm sure it still helps a little :)

Well that career path is definitely not open to me then. I'm currently earning over £30k as an electrician, could definitely take a cut in the short term but that's the bare minimum I need to earn. I definitely need a change of career though, can't be doing this all my life.

Leon

As a contractor now doing mainly 2nd line support I earn between £15-25p/h depending on role and location so thats 30-40K however thats inflated due to not perm, no holiday, no sickpay, no pension.

I was saying when i was pup.....
I still have no mcse or vmware or anything, doesnt stop me atm & i only contract my end work in the public sector. Over bloated departments, low call volume & as no hassle as long as you can do the job!

If your starting At the bottom, then itil. It will prove you understand sla, cal management, etc. its al stat driven & ticking boxes these days, not if somenoe can actually fix the problem!

Leon

Indeed more and more jobs I'm going for are asking for itil foundation where as before they were just happy if you knew what it was

CCNA is only ever really going to get you £25K ish. You need CCNP at least to hit over £30K unless you're lucky.

MCITP has been kind to me - I have one in Server 2008 and one in Exchange 2010 and I'm happy with what I earn now. What I'll earn in another 5 years moving into architecture should be very nice... I know Leons contracting hence all the helpdesk but I'd always look for Project/Implementation based roles - they pay far better for full time roles but you do need to know your stuff.
Career, Wife, Mortgage... my sig was better when it listed guitars and PC's and stuff!

Maybe I'll have to look into other career paths. I really have no clue as to what I want to do. I quit university having sat all of my exams and not completing the final project, in Computer Science. So I have a degree without honours, basically not worth the paper its written on.

I also am now a fully qualified electrician but dont want to be working on site anymore.
