Great, isnt it? :(

Frightening. I just heard a female army captain on the Randi Rhodes show insist that she is not to question the mission because shes a soldier and she is to follow orders. So Randi asks her what her duty is as an
American then. Not that she was telling the lady to not follow orders, but she was giving her hell for not bothering to think. You get to have an opinion when in the military, though acting on it can be a bad career move.
Something like 80% of people in some branches of the military are extremely conservative evangelicals as well. A connection? Duh. Same people who refuse to believe the world is a few billion years old and fossils are the work of Satan--shoot, convincing them of Saddams culpability in the aftermath of 9/11 is simple.
Army people dont really need to think too much, if they did a lot of them wouldnt be there. They are paid to follow orders and not question them which is why you are getting stories of civillian women and children being killed along with horrors like Abu Ghraib prison.
In order to quell their self inerests they need something to believe in and that isnt likely to be oil reserves for Uncle Sam (read Dubya).

I disagree.
Sure, service personnel are paid to follow orders but for them to carry orders out
unquestioningly is
extremely dangerous in this modern age of so-called war-fighting/peace-keeping.
A British soldier is actually paid to think on his feet; not to be a mindless automaton. Thats not me waffling - thats
doctrine. And thats why Britains Armed Forces win every single battle they fight - even when massively outnumbered.
But sadly, soldiers are also terrified of following their battle training to the letter these days in case of litigation. Its a terrible state of affairs.

That is true of ours but most of the Americans have a huge wodge of religion driven into them along with a gung-ho attitude that gets into the road of their thinking.
Where it really shows is in the post war reaction, the British soldiers are trained as peacekeepers as well as assault troops while the American ones arent. Their tactics is more like American Football than Soccer except they only have an offensive team.
This much
is true. :)

it isnt so much a case of being trained as peacekeepers or assault troops - it is about having a completely different attitude to some of the utter mongaloids the US recruits. Even during the war fighting phase you got royal marines etc.. putting on soft hats & patroling on foot through recently captured Iraqi towns.
The US troops dont appear to even bother to learn basic arabic or know anything about Iraqi or Arab culture.

thats partly a tradition they are carrying over from NI days though. IIRC the RM and Green Jackets never wore helmets when they where patrolling Belfast etc. Mate who was in the 14th/20th served alongside both groups and said they where all nutters because flying bricks where a pain in the arse.
its not just northern Ireland - its things like the break up of the british empire, counter insurgency campaigns in aden, oman, borneo etc... IIRC the malayan emergency is supposed to still be used as a textbook example of how to carry out a counter insurgency campaign.
The US still hasnt learnt from vietnam it seems.
They havnet learned that they need all their troops trained for a hearts and minds programme as well as a kill all our enimies one.
TBH I still dont think they have learned the ideas that your allies are not legitimate targets on the battlefield... and identify your target *before* you open fire.
Note this includes friends of Dick Cheney :mutley:

Their idea of hearts and minds is jamming their tv and radio stations with EW equipment, and dropping aid packets with propaganda leaflets on their towns and cities, some of the drops causing injury to the people on the ground. Getting smacked in the head by a pound of sugar falling from 15,000ft is along the lines of being shot at by a crap load of cannon.
Fact is... the US Forces are woefully indoctrinated. Sort of like a well financed and well trained terrorist force.
IRA = indoctrination
Taliban = indoctrination
