QuoteFive months after the celebrity chef Jamie Oliver succeeded in cajoling, threatening and shaming the British government into banning junk food from its school cafeterias, many schools are learning that you can lead a child to a healthy lunch, but you canââ,¬â,,¢t make him eat.
The fancy new menu at the Rawmarsh School here?
ââ,¬Å"Itââ,¬â,,¢s rubbish,ââ,¬Â said Andreas Petrou, an 11th grader. Instead, en route to school recently, he was enjoying a north of England specialty known as a chip butty: a French-fries-and-butter sandwich doused in vinegar.

The original menu makes the one I grew up with sound positively healthy.  For every pizza or burger, we at least got stuff like turnip greens, stewed tomatoes, okra, and cornbread.
/me slaps the collective kiddies in the UK with a virtual asparagus.
Why cant we make em eat?
Force feed the grotty little scrutters if thats what it takes
I grew up eating chip butties, and look where I am now! (Maybe not such a good example).
Ive gotta say though, its about parenting more than anything - most of us at school looked forward to school lunches, as we rarely had fried/junk food at home simply becuase it was so expensive compared to things like stews / bakes.
Indeed.
So theres the answer, tax fat in schools, therefore only rich kids will get fat, wholl have private healthcare anyway so wont put a strain on the NHS.
Jobs a goodun.
I didnt have the most healthy of school meals, but it wasnt too bad. We used to have sausage, fried eggs, fried bread and beans for brekkie every morning.
Mind you we did alot of exercise too. I used to love post match grub... always chips beans and bangers/hamburgers :D Nice.
Oh and Im currently 15.5 stone (about 217 pounds in American) hardly the picture of health but I do exercise :D
Cheers
Tongy
I always find it ammusing to see things like Chip Butties described for the benefit of people whove never heared of one.
Having known what one is all my life, Ive never thought of it quite that way before.
just me? oh well, one more thing that is then.

What, as an instrument of death?
"Oh, it was horrible Johnny, there was cheesecake and pork chops everywhere."
When I were a lad it was:
Hotdogs - perfectly healthy if its a nice one
Beefburgers - perfectly healthy if its a nice one
Pizza - perfectly healthy if its a nice one
Beans - perfectly healthy if theyre decent brand
Chips - cut back the salt and dont fry em theyre fine
Sausages - perfectly healthy if they aint deep-fried
Pies - perfectly healthy if its a nice one
Cheesecake - perfectly healthy if you dont eat 15
Muffins - perfectly healthy if you dont eat 15
Funny how 10yrs down the road its suddenly making everyone fat.
Lately everyone wants to play the big nice caring person whos out to look after the whole fking world tbh and its getting old fast.
edit: and That Tosser should get off the telly - maybe if it was someone else pushing the healthy food more people would pay attention.
edit: and the buttie (all varieties) is part of our culture and national heritage, even though we probably nicked the idea off someone else. The buttie should be promoted in a national campaign.
lazy fatass parenting where they plonk their kids down in front of the television, and feed them crisps and chocolate.
its the half-assed parenting which is letting our younger generations down.
I blame women for daring to leave the kitchen and get jobs.

Kudos on the lazy boy quote. I agree with that guy.
For those who havent heard the rest of the song:
"Americans, lets face it: Weve been a spoiled country for a long time.
Do you know what the number one health risk in America is?
Obesity. They say were in the middle of an obesity epidemic.
An epidemic like it is polio. Like well be telling our grand kids about it one day.
The Great Obesity Epidemic of 2004.
"Howd you get through it grandpa?"
"Oh, it was horrible Johnny, there was cheesecake and pork chops everywhere."
Nobody knows why were getting fatter? Look at our lifestyle.
Ill sit at a drive thru.
Ill sit there behind fifteen other cars instead of getting up to make the eight foot walk to the totally empty counter.
Everything is mega meal, super sized. Want biggie fries, super sized, want to go large.
You want to have thirty burgers for a nickel you fat mother fer. Theres room in the back. Take it!
Want a 55 gallon drum of Coke with that? Its only three more cents."

When I were a lad it was:
Hotdogs - perfectly healthy if its a nice one
> Tend to be boiled so healthier than many other fast foods
Beefburgers - perfectly healthy if its a nice one
> Good ones are 99% beef, bad ones contain lots of fat. Not as bad as sausage though. Tend to be bigger than the old ones.
Pizza - perfectly healthy if its a nice one
> Contains a lot of fat, modern ones are a lot bigger and have more topping.
Beans - perfectly healthy if theyre decent brand
> Cheap ones contain less processed sugar and are healthier than the more expensive ones.
Chips - cut back the salt and dont fry em theyre fine
Dont salt them at all and fry them in vegetable oil.
Sausages - perfectly healthy if they aint deep-fried
> Full of fat and rubbish, the skin holds in rusk soaked in fat.
Pies - perfectly healthy if its a nice one
>Can contain a lot of fat and sugar
Cheesecake - perfectly healthy if you dont eat 15
> You cant eat 15?
Muffins - perfectly healthy if you dont eat 15
> same as above.
at my school there were 2 queues, one for normal chips burgers etc... and one for healthy stuff....
I always went in the health one because there wasnt a queue and they had potato wedges.... Id pile my plate high with those, pop a couple of slices of quiche ontop... the perfect meal !
I remember liver being served at school dinners, something I never had to suffer again until BUPA had the nerve whilst incarcerating me  I bet thatd never fly in the healthy queue now
The problem is quite simple really, the parents. Mcdonalds, KFC, Burger King, some 5 minute easy cook pizzas from sommerfield etc, the answer is no.
Kids get to much choice and their parents are too weak to say this is all that is on offer tonight, ie cottage pie, eat it or starve.
This scene allways comes to mind and has me in stitches because its just so true.
QuoteGrandpa George: Mark my words. The first kid to find a golden ticket will be fat, fat, fat.
Augustus Gloop: [Augustus appears and cameras flash] I am eating the Wonka bar and I taste something that is not chocolate. Or coconut. Or walnut, or peanut butter, or caramel. Or sprinkles. So I look and I find the golden ticket.
Grandpa George: [the Bucket home sees the TV with Augustus on the screen] Told you hed be a porker.
Kids are plain fat today. It was only 5 1/2 years ago I left school and only 1 or 2 in your class/form had serious weight issues.
QuoteCheap ones contain less processed sugar and are healthier than the more expensive ones.
Not really, in my own experience cheap ones contain up to twice as much sugar as Heinz beans.

Heinz prodices a lot of tins for the supermarket own brands anyway. They tend to put more sauce in and less beans than the cheaper ones so while their sauce contains a little more sugar per gramme their tins have less of it in there. Beans are cheaper than the sauce.
Breaking news!!!
Its not the food, its because kids arent getting enough sleep.

That was in the Metro paper this morning :P Good to see we have cracked the problem and can move on. I was getting worried!
