BBC News
QuoteThe winning entry in a competition to design the first new British coin series for 40 years has been unveiled.

There were 4,000 entries to the public competition to find the new designs.

Matthew Dent, 26, from Bangor, Gwynedd, won the competition. He will have his work stamped on the side of millions of coins.

I think they are very cool myself. :)

The old coins will stay in circulation.

Mongoose

looks pretty good actually, I was expecting something awful but I like that idea.

Are they phasing out the £2 coin then? it doesnt seem to be included in the set as displayed on that site.

Cypher

Just looked it up.  Since its only 10 years old its not being touched.

Smugs

They look nice together but separate they look crap imo especially the 5p coin.

As for the two pound coin id imagine as it a relatively new coin and it's always changing its "reverse" to commemorate something, that's why its not in the collection.

When are they going to sack off hard cash and get everyone up to the century paying by card?

The designs are okay, but to be honest I wont give a damn when I have a handful of the rough sided coins in my back pocket irritating me.

Mongoose

I can see that logic, does seem a little half hearted though

"were going to have a unified design idea across all the coins........except that one"

supply and demand Clockd, the people have got to want it or at least not dislike it. Perhaps you might get a majority of people on this forum behind you, but we are hardly a representative cross section of society.

Mark

the new british coinage should be the euro

no thanks, our economy is decent enough not to have to join.    -)

Goblin

Those are nice. Very modern looking, which probably means in three years theyll look old hat.
It's all fun and games until a 200' robot dinosaur shows up and trashes Neo-Tokyo... Again.

Didnt do the south (Of Ireland) much harm - they have a smaller defecit, a GDP per person of 20% more than the UK, lower unemployment and consistently higher growth than us - all since joining up

Im no financial wizard but those look good to me!

Plus, it would mean I could go and get fuel without having to lift euros in their dodgy machines!

Quixoticish

I actually quite like the new design, its rather smart. I caught a glimpse of the "One Show" (utter utter low budget garbage, avoid at all costs) and they ran an article on this last week, it was the first Id heard of it. The focus was them whining incessantly that "Britannia" was being taken off the 50p due to political correctness gone mad and so we dont upset our new "multicultural" society. (It seems to be rather trendy to jump on the "oh noes! They be stealin mah British-ness" bandwagon at the moment). They then went on to interview people who had sent in designs or something for the competition, and to be honest the ideas were absolute cack, youd get more relevant designs from a primary school class. (I believe the presenter of the program wanted the Wi-Fi symbol on our coinage. Seriously, WTF?).

So yes, after that debacle its rather nice to see theyve chosen a fairly good design. And avoid the One Show.

Big part of that is to do with the suspiciously low corporate tax rates though surely?
"Within your 'purview'? Where do you think you are, some f**king regency costume drama? This is a government department, not some f**king Jane f**king Austen novel!"
