3 cylinder engines rock. :D They have a spunk all their own. :D I miss my hatch with the 1.0L Daihatsu lump in it. Cant say Ive enjoyed driving a car as much as that one. Good gearbox + low expectations FTW.

Daewoos tend to be reliable and economic so it will hopefully do you good service ;)

Remember to post in the cars and bikes forum if you customise it or shoehorn in a 3 litre engine :D

I miss my 1st car, but I think anyone who gets their 1st car should spend no more than £500 on it as they will crash, scratch or bump it. 98% Guranteed.

Glad you got somthing sensible, good to park!

I was in town yestarday and some guy spent about 10 mins trying to get the big VW Tourag into a largish space, he failed and drove off.

With hindsight Id go the other way.  Noone should spend less than a grand on there first car for the same reasons.

The cost of buying a car is so negliigble compared to running it and if youre likely to crash you dont want to be sat in a tin box.  Too many friends died in crashing sh*t £5-600 cars (Vauxhall Novas, old fiestas, Pugeot 205s).  For a tiny bit more the people who bought puntos, bigger old cars and newer models walked away even from rolling them, etc.

I had a sh*t vauxhall nova but luckily never crashed.  I would NEVER go back to a sh*t car and sure as hell wouldnt put my kids in one.

My first car was a 1957 Volvo PV, with a roaring 60 Hk DIN 1600cc B-16 engine, 3 speed with 1st gear unsynced.
Mine was dark green :)

Between the overt ***ism and the obvious inexperience with said engine--personally, I just cant get enough Edd. :D

Ive had a couple 3 cyl cars. Both were silky smooth, no different than a good 4 cyl, just with a very distinctive idle. Indeed, Ive owned the 4cl and 3cl Daihatsu Charades and the 3 was markedly smoother. Its actually pretty legendary, especially in turbod form, among the rally set.

I had 3 cyl daihatsu for a while and have to agree with Max it is a great little car and it did not vibrate !
Also have a 3 cyl Massey Ferguson and it does not vibrate more than normal :)

I wish they still sold them in the states. :( Id get a new one in a heartbeat. People used to make fun of my wittle hatch, so Id make them drive it, and theyd be sold. Very Mini-like, but even better as it was Japanorific. :D Tin can-like in an accident, but you cant have everything. :D Only car I ever owned where I consistently got notes under my wiper for offers to buy it. Who wouldda thunk it?

My left nut to get my Charade (totaled by a redneck in a taxi) and my 68 Saab back. I only sold the Saab as everybody kept warning me what a liability it would be--but dangit, in retrospect it ran like a brand new car, and I sold it for a measly $500. Stupid me.

Id argue that the paranoia of driving really gimpy cars like my Charades has made me a better, more paranoid driver than if Id had something bigger and safer. This all can be summed up in Johnny Cashs "Boy Named Sue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boy_named_sue)" theory of personal evolution.

Hard data shows that places with mandatory helmet laws have indeed had increased injury reported by cyclists.

Ergo--the US, with all of its humongous vehicles, has a motor vehicle death rate higher than many countries that drive Fiat 500s held together with string.

You can get strong cars for under £500.

they might not have street cred but it might save the drivers life if cocooned in a sweedish tank. Unless they hit a VW bus head on.

Ive been thinking of getting a vintage late 70s-80s 240 actually, but the 5 speeds are getting rare around, and the old Volvo auto-boxes suck. Still, its the car that Click and Clack (http://www.cartalk.com/) recommend for beginners.

You say that as if half your friends have died in cars - are you living in the most dangerous area in the world or something ?

It was yorkshire not Newcastle but point taken.  My girlfriend and her brother died in a car crash just after she passed her test.  In the same week 2 friends from school died in seperate incidents.

A couple of friends from uni have died in car crashes at the start when they were still in their school days cars.  1 on my course who Id been working alongside for 2 years.

My sister put her friend through the windscreen of her car when she rolled her cinquecento on the night she passed her test.  She didnt die but she was pretty messed up for a long time.  That was a new car and it ended up through a hedge on its roof after hitting a tree stump on the side of the road.  An older car would have crumpled.

So yeah - all in all Ive not had good experiences.  My girlfriend, 4 very close friends and several other mates from school and uni.  Its one of the hazards of having quite a few friends and living in big open areas where you have to drive everywhere.  The people who walked away were in either big old cars (like Volvos) and modern small cars (new fiestas, puntos, etc).  Work out how many people on these forums have had a serious crash and youd be suprised.

I only had one young person around me kick the bucket when we were starting driving. She shot herself in the mouth with a shotgun. The yearbook shows her in a group picture of the French club wearing a scarf and holding a sign that says, "Im cold" in French. Creepy!

Not really, Katie dieing was pretty appauling and shook us all up.  The rest are what happens when youve moved school every 2 years since you were born.  You have a lot of friends and you see the same sh*t going on.

You can throw in two lads I lived with overdosing on the same night when they necked half a jam jar of broken ecstacy tablets for a laugh in our front room if you want a pretty messed up way of dieing.  Its called knowing lots of people.

Theyre a tiny proportion of mates but it adds up.  Out of all the people Ive been close friends with whove died theyve nearly all been in car crashes late at night/early morning in sh*t cars.  the others were 2 overdoses and 1 with lukemia.  The number whove written off a car must be huge tho and most of them probably survived because they were in there parents cars or crashed in later years of uni when they had better cars.

Many years ago (in the 70s) I learned that a 3 cyl is smoother than 4 cyl.
Its because if I remember, the crank is in different positions when on the firing stroke in a 3, but in tdc or bdc on a 4.
My 1969 BSA Rocket 3, is as the name suggests a 3 cylinder.

There is a reason for car insurance to be higher for people 18-21. Many boys with a new license and a car are stupid drivers who wants to go fast but does not have the experience to do so.

Thats in the new system, used to be group 2 in the old one, try looking at something in group 20 or higher...

Relatively speaking the insurance is cheap but you really have to look around for a good deal. Price should be £1500 to £2500 depending on mileage. My brothers only had a few thousand miles on the clock and he still got it for £2.5K. Very nice condition too.
