After watching the election unfold, and seeing the problems caused by minority and irrelevant parties (Wales, SNP, UDP, etc), I think its time England focused on itself. Westminster cannot be held to ransom begging the UDP for votes for a coalition.

I propose we let NI go. Its time as part of the UK has been and gone. I think people in NI are lovely lovely people but they are Irish not Great British and have no part in determining our (GB) future.

Thoughts ?

Edd

I thought you meant National Insurance to start with!

But, I thought that people in NI dont want to be part of ireland and want to be part of great britain?

Maybe Mark or Goblin could shed some light on the feeling over there, as theyll be far more in the know than me

Sam

This isnt about if they want to be part of us, its about do we want them.

I know many NI citizens might want to be part of the UK but personally speaking, NI is just a nuisance.

I dont think thats the best option. What we can do is devolve Englands parliament into a local one. Just like Scotland and Wales have their own parliaments England should have one.

That was the each country can vote for their own parliament (this election England overwhelmingly voted Conservative). Currently Scotland vote and have a major impact on English laws, the English have no say on Scottish laws. UK wide issues such as defence, border control etc would still be at a UK level but taxation and spending should be on a national level. This would mean London and the South would stop giving handouts to the rest of the UK. Currently its a terribly one sided devolution.

the whole system is broke. personally it should be a straight race & forget regions.
whoever has the most votes at the end wins.

we dont have parliment, we have an assembly. I think the main difference is an Assembly cant introduce or change taxes, etc.
I agree England should have its own assembly as well. Scotland is all but in name an independent country, so it wrong they are voting on english (& welsh) law changes, etc.
As Wales comes mostly under english law, then they should still be able to vote.

Serious

If you look back most of the people presently living in Northern Ireland are descended from people originally sent there from England. Cutting them off would be a bad idea.

I would much prefer an independent Assembly for England, handling the issues that the Scottish parliament does for them and being separate from the Union government.

The Assemblies could then be switched to proportional legislation while local and national government remains the same.

That's not true at all, a lot of them can trace their ancestry back to different parts of mainland UK and are indeed British rather than Irish. Where do think the Unionist voice comes from? Because it's sure as hell not from the native Irish population.

Who cares about 500 years ago.

Should I be able to vote in the Danish elections? I mean my heritage is viking!

Eagle

We (as the UK) should invade Wales, Scotland and NI and bring them under control again.  Devolution is seriously going to f**k this place up.

Youll see.

... or give them their independence, sit back and watch them die....

;)

NB: This is a Nationalist opinion, not an English one.  I am not English, I am British.

youve got that the wrong way round tbh..

it would make more sense to have the national govt elected by proportional representation and the assembles to be first past the post.

local accountability via constituency MPs for the assembly which is going to be ruling on internal issues and the UK wide govt ruling on international issues, defence, foreign relations etc... would be more reflective of the number of the population that voted for each party...
