Post by: Sam on October 21, 2009, 02:05:28 AM
So I was looking on tmobile.co.uk and you guys can get a G1 for free, #30 a month for what Im paying $85 a month for.
Were getting ripped off here.
Im surprised everyone doesnt have an android phone in the UK - or maybe they do /

Thats a bargain really. Why people dont have an iphone, android or similar is beyond me.

Anyway, I pay $65 for 300 minutes, unlimited web / texts. Then $5 for cheaper international calls. Somehow ends up being $85 a month though.

Blackberry 8900 on Panther 45. 1200mins, 500 Texts and unlimited e-mail.  Along with that Ive got unlimited browsing through the BIS Service, and 500Mb of other data.  including staff discounts that costs me £27 rather than £45.  I dont really like iPhones, and I dont like any of the Android form factors Ive used so far.

The G1 is a bit bulky I agree. The iPhone is much much nicer phone than the G1. However Cocoa is horrible (doesnt even support multitasking), whereas Android is very well designed (I wont say excellent, it frustrates me at times - the preference for XML layout being one).

Because I dont need it and my present one costs me very little. I certainly dont use £30 worth of calls a month

It is a catch 22. Even Android 2.0 wont be multi-touch yet which is daft tbh. That has to be patched in sooner then later for a start.
Palm need to push and share the OS. I know they are still getting it a lot sweeter but they defiantly need it out there. It is really nice to write apps on there.

$65 is about £35-£40?
Thats not bad really...
Would work out around the same over here.

A large chunk is to pay for the phone remember.

Its a bargain if youre using that much, no two ways about it. For my level of usage Ill stick with only paying £15 a month and having a less flashy phone though. My new LG Cookie is clever enough to keep my inner geek happy as long as I dont look at my mates Iphone too much lol.

Must be an HTC add-in as I can pinch, zoom, twist all that jazz.

Do like my iphone tbh....

Can check facebook, gmail etc.... at work without whacking it all up on a big screen directly in front of my boss - use the tube status app in the morning, use the bloomberg app for the news - would prefer to have a better camera on it though and some apps have been a bit buggy at times - usually in areas where I cant get wi-fi or 3G - on a normal mobile network the facebook app will sometimes crash if say someone has been tagged in pics in the news feed....

I heart my G1, one or two tiny things that are a little bit frustrating but in general f**king love it!

Those dont look any cheaper. Im paying $60 right now for unlimited web/text and with 300 minutes (but dont use minutes because of google voice).

I also have 1.6. It changes the Progess Dialog and adds some nice stuff into the API (Speech for one) but for the end user its all about 2.0

Oh yeah never realised they were incrementing the letters haha.

Emailed my friend at google - its gonna be called flan.

Flan it certainly is.

Any one know why Orange contracts are hardly competetive these days?  Vodafone are offering unlimited texts and internet a £25 for a Hero IIRC yet with orange unlimited internet is £10 bolr alone with unlimited text contracts starting at £20-£25.

Orange are pushing Blackberry harder than anyone else, plus they dont have a horribly overloaded network.

1.6 is skipping the Hero.

Viva la 2.0!

Well 1.6 is no difference anyway.
When is 2.0 out? The SDK got released today, I shall download it later see what new features are any good.

Well the droid is out today and that comes with 2.0 so can see the rest of us getting it some point soon.

As for 1.6 vs 2.0 there are details and a video on:
