Title: Plans for the year [2012]
Post by: neXus on February 01, 2012, 20:51:40 PM
We know what some of us are doing work wise from the other thread but what are your plans?
NY resolutions are gay but you will be setting goals, looking to do some events etc.

Me:
- April/March - Speech at Adobe event in Sydney and holiday there.
- Holiday plans - Sydney, Fiji, Queenstown (snowboarding), China. (Not all of them but one or the other or some.)
- Working on a few projects web wise, some are pretty big, one is involving tek. Bit over stretched at the moment but its for bigger and brighter things.
- Improve my skills further as always
- Hopefully not have any odd accidents like past couple of years so I can get back playing rugby.
- Get engaged.

- Become Dad (not much choice about this one)
- Get my net savings well into the black - some start towards house savings
- Move from IT into business side (Analyst or Trader) or at least be in a position to take the next opportunity.

I'd like to be doing that too.

Also planning on visiting my family in NZ for Christmas (which will hit the saving plan hard). Other than that just graft and earn more money this year than last, as I have tried to do year on year.

Move into my sodding house.
No chain either side and so far it's 6 months and counting.
If anyone's looking at buying a house DO NOT USE SIMPSON MILLER LLP.
They are absolutely useless.

They say that buying a house is stressfull, they don't say it's incompetent solicitors that make it so.
They say we're on a flood plain.  No we're not.  Sheffield had a great flood in the 1800's when a dam burst.
They say we're in an area with high Radon.  No sh*t, all of Sheffield is.
They say we have no legal right of way to the property.  Well sort it out then.  They had all this information in September and they are drip feeding us this information now.

If your solicitor says they are using a trainee, run very far.  They'll be more interested in updating their facebook than your purchase.

Look to start a distance learning course in something more mentally challenging than the electrical work I currently undertake every day. I'm doing commercial work which involves a lot of metal munching so its much better than domestic spark work but I still feel the need to challenge myself.

I've been looking into engineering. Found a few courses, will see how that all pans out.

My Dad was a sparky but he moved into the wrapping machines (wrap foods etc) which covers the machine, install's, repairs and then because of his background he is very much wanted because he can do the electric stuff too.
You may not do that but that is a good thing to head down towards having some engineering stuff behind you. Being able to do both in what you end up doing will be handy.

Would advise caution about distance learning, unless it's with the OU I've no trust in any of the companies them after working for a well known one.

The entire business it's about getting a sale.

Career triangles, sh*t sandwiches, playing on folks fears. Hell I was a tutor for a company that sold mcse's and d's I've never done one in my life had no idea what I was talking about beyond what my degree could allow me to BS my way through.

Then my company branched out into electrical, gas and plumbing courses.

Guess who was a "qualified tutor"- me again. Telling folk how to wire up a house safely and fit gas appliances by googling while they were on the phone to me, quite rightfully watchdog came knocking soon enough but the company still carried on trading.

So tread very carefully out there.

Mine are probably the same as they were last year.

Clear some debts (been hammerinh this lately down about 3k since November) still a good 12k to go. Gotta love being a dumb ass during the financial boom. :-P

Finish the dozens of half started/finished jobs around the house and garden.

Better myself with some extra qualifications. Thinking nvq4 or HNC electrical engineering.

Main one would be the wife wants to start trying for our first kid around sept.

Mine are - get my knee fixed - need to have my ACL replaced... :(

put in a good effort with my OU courses and start looking at applying for full time MSc courses in Stats and/or machine learning at the end of the year - hopefully finish OU Maths degree by June 2013 for a Sept/Oct 2013 start on the MSc...

Try to get more project work/better pay rise at current job - have only got current pay review and next years to get as much money together before quitting to do masters. Might try contracting for the last 6 months if the daily rate is high enough but could result in threats of legal action from current employer. Recently blew all my savings on a new flat so need to get the $$$ in.... Also means I need to try and get into either UCL or Warwick so I can either live at London flat or live at parents house rent free and not have to worry too much about renting out London flat.

Also have a few website ideas/ideas for apps... not sure if I'll have the time to implement them but will try to give it a go - not necessarily with the aim of making money but more just for fun/personal interest. Also have an iphone/android game in mind - sort of a simple turn based space game... bit geeky and not likely to be too popular but of interest to me.

Have a few ideas for algo trading systems - though again this could be time consuming and would require me putting at risk the cash I'll be saving for the masters... then again if it goes well I'll hopefully have more than enough for the masters...
