Title: Probe into couple smoking at home?!?!
Post by: Serious on January 10, 2007, 03:29:00 AM
QuoteA council has confirmed it is investigating a complaint from a neighbour about a couple smoking in their own home.

A woman, who has not been named, has written to the council saying cigarette smoke from next door was "permeating into her living room".

Gwynedd Councils public protection service has said it has a duty to investigate.

Gavin Gordon-Crawley, the subject of the complaint, called it "a joke".

Mr Gordon-Crawley, 51, who smokes 20 cigarettes a day and whose wife is a social smoker, told The Sun newspaper: "I can understand smoking bans in certain places - even a total public smoking ban.

"But being told I cant smoke in my own home. It must be some sort of joke."

Jeanette Gordon-Crawley, 54, who lives in a semi-detached house, added: "We cant see how smoke from our house could possibly get into the house next door.

You cant ban someone smoking in there own home.  But if the smell is somehow getting into next doors house something needs fixing.

Kcufing country is going down the pan.

My nextdoor neighbours dog sh*ts in their garden and it smells from time to time (prevailing wind direction etc) but we dont moan.

I tell ya, if someone complained about me smoking in my house and I found out who it was...

If i was them i would take up smoking outside, preferably as near to the their neighbours open windows as possible.

Problem is most smokers dont realise how far it travels - we had an aussie backpacker living with us who kept smoking in her room completely oblivious to the fact that simply leaning out of the window isnt the same as smoking outside  as the smoke just blows backwards into the room & stinks out the corridor - we chucked her out after a few weeks.

If the smoke is going into the neighbours house then theyve got every right to complain - tis no different to a neighbour having a noisy dog or playing loud music.

gotta say I agree, you should be able to expect not to have to breath someone elses smoke in your house

but if both sides were decent reasonable people surely theyd have talked to each other

"look, the smoke is coming through from your house into mine"
"oh dear, we cant be having that, lets find out where its getting through and sort it out"

find the hole in the party wall, bit of plaster, hey presto no more smoke.

I agree with that, smoker should be able to smoke in their own house and non-smoker should not have to breath it in their own house... just talk about it and get things sorted... Doing that has just blown everything out of the water and made neighbours bitter at each other

I had a similar situation towards the end of last year. Moved into a new flat and nextdoor kept smelling the smoke (both me and the missus smoke), so we got a draught excluder and put it at the base of the connecting door, hey presto, no smoke smells next door.

^^^ sensible & decent thing to do

if more smokers were like white giant then they wouldnt cause any where near as much fuss.

Perhaps if more non-smokers were like his neighbours and discussed it rather than making a complete meal out of the situation there wouldnt be as much fuss either.

Swings and round-abouts.
