How untimely and undeserved :(

Absolutely tragic. I always found myself drawn to the man for his boundless enthusiasm for the subject, and I loved his TV shows. The man educated millions of people across the globe and opened their eyes to conservation issues regarding species that most people consider "nasty" and wouldnt normally give a second glance to.

Im as gutted as everyone else, I really liked the bloke and supported him through the croc+daughter incident. His death is definitely untimely but he did take a lot of calculated risks in his work and was injured several times, eventually the odds are going to get you.

Im really sad for his kids, family and friends though and I do hope they continue the vital work they have been doing.

decent lad and cared about animals and the planet...

but the way he did things was always going to mean he had the life expectancy of a suicide bomber with bubonic plague, he had his legs slapped a few times for doing controversial stunts and the like...

sad day though :(

Thats a good thing, his wife Terry is just as mad and committed, they will improve things in his memory.

Its really odd, He does stuff that has a lot of danger and risk but he was forever going on about safty and training and doing things right, the show on the weekend was about training new people to handly crocs in the right way.
Only One other person Ever around the coast of Oz has known to die from the sting of one of them so was very much a million to one shot rather then his risks being the bettter of him.

the fact that stingrays have only killed a small number of  people could give you an idea of what happened, they are very placid creatures and do not attack unless provoked. I imagine, though i could be wrong, that steve as he tended to do, got a little over zealous/enthusiastic and got caught out. He got a couple of tellings off from organisations for getting too close to animals on an antarctic survey shoot, as well as other excursions, a decent bloke but sometimes a loose canon.. :(

Hmm maybe, its defence so yeah you could be right, Still Even when they sting most people survive, it mus have caught him right around the heart

Really sad news this he was one of the bright sparks in the world at the moment and fun to watch him and his team develop something big in terms of Animal conservation.

apparently it was directly in the chest, [from the news] it [the death] was caused by trauma and not the venom from the sting, so he would have died instantly...

thats the game you play - if you survive it makes good TV, to get so close to these amazing creatures, but if it goes wrong, its devastating...

Sop basically caught him unlucky around the heart and triggered a heart attack and lung distress then :/

Crikey!

Its a damn shame that is to have a freak accident like that. Apparently this sort of accident has happened once before in 1945. Hes done a hell of lot to preserve nature especially in his homeland and he always knew he was taking a risk when he got up close to animals. It is a very sad tragedy and may he RIP :(

Ive seen a few reports that mention it wasnt actually the venom that killed him, it was a puncture wound to the heart, hence why death occured so quickly. If that is indeed the case then it really is one of those one a million chance events.

QuoteJohn Stainton, a friend and colleague, said Irwin swam too close to the ray while he was diving off his boat Croc One near Batt Reef, northeast of Port Douglas.

"He came on top of the stingray and the stingrays barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart," said Mr Stainton, who was on board Irwins boat at the time.

When I first heard he died, I was sure it was due to his charming but head banging dumbassity. Then I find out that it was a ray barb tothe heart. Freakish, but a hell of away to exit stage left for a larger than life figure.

IMO it was only a matter of time before a man who actively provokes (or at least every time I have seen him on TV) dangerous animals died in a freak accident involving a dangerous species.
