Title: Tekforums: Suggestions
Post by: XEntity on January 11, 2011, 19:28:34 PM
Thought I'd start a new thread with suggestions of changes, as didn't want to clutter the bugs thread.. But things I'd like to see...

- Make it blue! (In progress I think)

- Make the massive title section more compact, I hate having to scroll just to get to the forums! (Put the buttons up top etc?) Although you can click the arrow top right, as I've just found, but still a little more compact wont hurt!

- Is it possible to have a button like the old one to show most recent threads, it has unread and most recent posts, but neither are the same as the old layout, and I prefer it!

That's all I have just now, I think it's a very good move, just can't get used to it yet and needs some stuff to make it more friendly!

Good thread idea.

I think those changes will probably have to wait to be part of the blue theme as part of modifying it though.

Yep no problem, by the way have just found this mod from SMF which allows the recent topics we are used to!

That addon is not needed and does not work on RC4 anyway xEntity.
The link for it is there, its just a matter of CSS to turn it into a nice button and as Nige mentioned, the header stuff will all get sorted.

I think this is great, as the long standing members, through thick and thin can now have a say on how they want their forum to be run.

Clock'd, I salute (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Clock'd%200Ne) thee.

Well I used to love when I saw a few people say - Hey, Really need spoilers because of xxx reason. And one of the guys with admin access manages to sort it out.
Some style thing not quite right and one of the people who knows how and has access quickly fixes it up.

One of the nice things about SMF like others I am sure.... in the admin backup of the database is DEAD EASY and Nige for example will hammer that regularly.

Nexus please re-read my original post for both your responses, the link that exists does not do what the old forum did (The two links either show unread threads or display a list of posts), not like the old forum that showed the last 50 threads to be commented in, which was pretty much the only view I used and I believe a few others. (Not a deal breaker would just be nice if fairly simple!)

And also regarding the arrow that you pointed out, I already mentioned that in the original post?

You will now find in your Profile Look and Layout section an option to set whether you want a WYSIWYG + bbc + smilies option on the Quick Reply or not.

Quotes with images in will now show a link to display the image quoted instead of redrawing the full image again first.

I know I'm a noobie and not clued up like you guys, but thought I give a few ideas that ppl like me would find useful.

1.a tutorial section on how to do things.

2.a section on tips and tricks.

3.build logs with pics etc

Sorry if they all sound noobie, but there are a lot of us noob out there and getting help I find is not easy on the net on certain forums, those that have the knowledge are not always willing to share,I think this would attract new ppl and make the site more friendly.  ;D

Tutorials, this is something i've been thinking over the last couple of days, it also need not be limited to just hardware but can be expanded upon in other sections as well and most likely stickied, so we can have Car/Bike related, Photography etc etc.

Anyone can give it a go and write one up, so if there is something your experienced in then put something together with some pictures :D, once we have a frontend sorted we could add them as content to that as well.

Dont know if its been noticed or something in IE8 on this work machine but when you get to the bottom of the page of posts and click page 2 it jumps to to the bottom of page 2... which is annoying.

That's a wierd one Dooms. It must just be your particular one as mine works, I'm guessing you need to go into the cache settings and switch it from Automatic to Update every visit to the page.

Goblin did a really wonderful tutorial/writeup on AV systems for the Entertainment section age ago but it was lost in the great database crash of dickety six, we definitely could do with another one now for the current tech. If he's reading and interested xD If not I can have a stab when the forums settle down.

Appears to be being caused by the Quick Reply box. You click page x and loads that page and then jumps to the top of the reply box ready to type. Will have a play with setting but might just be something with this machine.

Ok played with look & feel options but still doing it. It's starting to piss me off... its not just when you click page 1/2/3/4/5 its when you open any thread, just jumps straight down to quick reply.

Indeed. Me and Nige looking at improvements in every aspect - Everything were looking at is not to just make it look nice. Clean, does it need to be there? Show it when it needs to be there to create the same information but looking more refined.
We both do this as our livelihoods so we will make sure its a good job and I plan to post mockups of elements of new stuff for people to view before actually doing it.

Give us a week or so as were doing this in our spare time and were trying to do it right.

so tekheads linkage is here to stay.

how about taking it one step further?
so im browsing a product. like it. i can like it on FB. bad audience though, my mates aren't necessarily geeks.
a button to like it on tekforums would be nice. that button would create a new thread (facebook connect would be nice too) and post my thoughts into it, which would be a great way to start discussion about some new producs on tekheads site.

I'm not sure how easy something like that would be to impliment but its a pretty good idea, whether we have it come from Tekheads or a frontend of our choosing.

Nice find Bacon :) I'm not going to install any other mods that affect the templates until we've got the blue theme in place, as it will only mean having to go back and manually update it all.

i could do it in the django based cms's i work with, so im convinced its doable. but i can only code in that flavour, im not as good a dev as sam.

i do think it'd be nice n fresh, i dont spend a vast amount of time on other sites, but im not sure anyone else has it...

I'm in two minds as to whether I think this is a good idea. On the one hand it might improve communications and create activity, on the other people might 'chat' things they'd otherwise post and we might end up with less in the threads...

Not sure which way that would go?

Brian, that's the actual Tekheads site you're talking about. It's not really anything to do with the forums or that I can change - unless Andy from Tekheads happens to read it  :)

bear, I take it these are mods on other boards? I don't understand the function of the second one, as for the first I can set a max width/height for posted images and it will resize them, but I chose to leave it for people to decide; sometimes large images are appropriate and other times not I think.

imagew is used on TTi forums  they use  PunBB  (http://punbb.informer.com/) it is really handy if you have a large 1600 x1200 or bigger and want to resize it automaticly to 800x600 or similar. Also handy for mods who can add a w to the image tag if there is annoyingly large pictures posted.

The second one is the code you right in your custom tag in bbcodeXtra, it make a youtube code of yer clipboard with the youtube link one can also use _selection_

i was on about this...Welcome to Tekforums, a Simple Machines Forum (SMF)!

SMF is an extremely flexible software package that gives forum administrators the ability to tailor their forum to their desires through a large collection of built-in features, additional themes, and custom modifications. As such, it allows for great variance in look and functionality between SMF forums. There are, however, a number of features that are common to all SMF forums, which this help

Is thi still to do with tekheads, sorry i,m confused thought the forums where now independant. :worried:

I see what you mean now Brian, You said top right when you meant top left  :)

I don't think that's actually editable as standard, but I guess it couldn't hurt to have a look later.

The forums are independent of Tekheads, we're just kindly hosting their support section here as a (hopefully) mutually beneficial arrangement.

And in the admin you can set it to scale any image added to certain dimensions etc I think as standard etc.

I did link to Nige a plugin that creates a uniform thumbnail method.

Nothing wrong with what people are doing now, I do think a uniform image on post implementation may be a nice idea to keep things neat and tidy but I am not hear nor there about it. In new theme ill make sure it scroll bars at least with overflow.

There is also an imageshack button you can add to upload to imageshack and get the code without leaving the forums.

As mod I could add width=800 to the tag if I want to resize a to large picture.

Hehe. Well as I said on MSN, I want to try that other theme Idea. Forums are just a cluster f**k compared to modern interface design. We can get some of that on the SamBB theme but....

To anyone who cares. I got a really very very modern design for forums, quite different and will be white grey. I plan to develop this at home and when its working in a version Nige may put it on here as an option for people to try.

Android 3.0 email but used in a number of modern interfaces. I think it will work very well for forums and want to give it a try.

Out of all the forums I visit, the best layout is

http://www.reallymeansounds.com/forum/

Really dislike the stupid big icons on this new one. (Like the no new posts/new posts)

Instead of a "Thanked" system, how about a trader feedback?

I've submitted feedback mod to Nige as well. The Thanked system will include Thanking posts in general, rep building for being helpful.

Instead of a "chat" box, which would detract from the forum...how about integrating IRC?

I've just been introduced to a new forum feature implemented on the VillianRom forums (http://www.villainrom.co.uk/forum/content.php?251-New-Feature-at-VillainROM-Forums-Name-Mentions) that I think should be part of the bread and butter of any forum.

A twitter style mention notification system.
The concept is that if someone typed @Nimrod in a post, the forum would notify me that I've been mentioned in said post. Thus ensuring that I never miss any posts that I should be replying to.

(Not that anyone ever asks for my opinion, they just get it )

A quick look at the SMF mod's page didn't yield any fruit but then I'm not sure what to search for :o

Bold thread titles for threads with unread posts
I'm sure that on the old forum I could quickly see which threads in a forum had new posts as they were shown in bold in the forum listing. Would it be possible to replicate that here ?

---

@Nexus,
There is a lot of wasted space in a Gmail style threaded conversation layout.
What (imo) would be great, is to utilise floating/collapsing bars for the structure navigation so that the entire screen can still be used to render the thread.

i.e.
Mouse over to left edge, floating bar (vertical orientation) with all forum titles appears.
Mouse over title, additional (child) bar appears with sub-forums titles at top and then thread titles below.
Recursive handling of mouse over sub-forums creating child bars...
Mouse click on thread hides all bars and shows thread.

But I'm too lazy to code it up, I'm happier using whatever is given to me :)

Otter layout forum is a personal project Idea that the guys may allow as an option, so ignore it really.

New skin is coming, I had a wedding to go to on the weekend and Im picking up where I left off.
100% humidity last couple of days here. It's nasty! Working on computer last night was not an option.

They do, but working with nige on icons to get ones that fit the theme. Not easy as it looks like they may be custom because not to much works with the blue theme. A lot of standard modern UI elements I can't do because of the blue.
We got ideas though. Trying to do it as fast as possible.
