thankfully the BBC seem to have reached a decent conclusion:

QuoteThe governors programme complaints committee - which operates independently of the BBC - acknowledged Chris Moyles description of a ringtone he did not like as "gay" could cause offence.
But the use of the word "gay" to mean "lame" or "rubbish" was widespread among young people, it said.
tis fair enough tbh...
it used to mean happy
then people used it to mean homosexual
now it is also used to mean lame or rubbish
languages change - people writing in to complain about the use of gay to mean lame need to get over themselves IMO.
Indeed. 5/5, thread closed? XD
lol Kudos to the BBC.
Could also see it as a natural progression..
Gay = Queer = Not right or rather not the usual = Wrong :|
I.E. I often say "ahhh my computer is being gay" meaning "my computer is going wrong".
gay means "carefree, happy" dont it?
The use of gay as a derogatory adjective is directly linked to suspicion and disregard for homosexuals. Its not like innocent and accepted slang, such as calling something "cool" even though its not cold.
The prevalence of its use in the UK is directly linked to an innate acceptance of mild bigotry in your country.

Why the sudden anglo-phobia today Max? Thats twice.

Except the homosexual community chose it to represent themselves as the word homosexual was regarded as sounding nasty.

It depends how you see it I guess.
I associate with a couple of gay folks, they have no aversion to me using Gay to describe lameness, in fact they find "gay" derogatory in itself if used to describe them. They prefer Homosexual if they have to be buttoned in as anything.
Then again I can see how some overly PC homosexual people may feel about it, but again I think its them being uppity rather than truly being offended by it.

Mostly I would agree with you except he has a supprisingly good singing voice :o
Languages change and as said before Gay used to mean happy and wonderful then it changed to another name for a Homosexual and now with it widespread use as a way of saying somthing is rubbish or crap its changing again.
As an aside
for the people who dont like the use of gay to mean lame
the word lame in itself is probably offensive (or was when it was first used) towards disabled people
languages change tbh...
well Im a happy guy, and Im offended that homosexuals have stolen the word gay :P
