Title: Turkey - defrosting advice please
Post by: mrt on December 20, 2007, 10:11:34 AM
We normally always buy fresh, but just due to schedules, we bought a Turkey Joint from Waitrose and froze on day of purchase (last saturday).  Its just a standard size (serves 6).

When do I defrost in time to cook on christmas day?  It needs to be defrosted fully, so was thinking I should take out freezer on christmas eve morning and leave on the side until christmas day morning.  Then cook at 2/3pm on christmas day?

Is this right?  Or should I leave out from morning on eve and then leave in fridge over night for the rest of period?

Bit confused and wife is pregnant so I have to be 100% with this.  Do not want to have middle still frozen on the day of cooking.

Cheers

Normally my mum just used to take it out on the morning of Christmas Eve and let it defrost. Either way seems adequate.

The one thing that you really want to avoid is washing it. That just spreads the germs that were on the bird around the kitchen and possibly onto everything else you are cooking. Bung it straight into the oven and cook the damn thing, that kills off any bugs anyway.

Defrosting in a sink full of water is quicker than air defrosting, bear in mind that youll want to leave the bird wrapped if doing this though.

balls to all of that, open the bag up, stand it up in the sink under the hot tap and leave the tap running, flooding its arse with hot water ;)
