Title: What a bt engineer said..
Post by: neXus on January 29, 2007, 10:36:49 AM
He  has a full old working! Diseal Train out the back... lol wtf

But anyway he let me into something that BT will as of Next year start fitting the whole Uk with fibre optic cable and will take 3-5 years and then 100mb to start with for all.
All been paid for and work will start then, What they are doing now is improving all the excahnges for current speeds but while they are at it making the changes needed in part for the next step.

It is nice to know at least it is defiantly coming at some point, he said speed increases as they find stability by 50 or 100mb at a time but with the new lines it would be the whole UK rather then just areas.

About time would be an understatement.

chatting to a Telewest guy im led to believe they have already sorted out a lot of places for upto 100Mb to the doorstep provided you are within 100m of the green boxes.  They wont deploy though until their exchanges are up to scratch and they have a wide enough backbone to take the hammering itll obviously get if its less than Ã,£100 a month.

Moving the BT core network to optical has been on the cards for a long time. BT are losing a lot of money due to not being able to internally route voice over IP. Just getting their core network moved over is set to save them a fortune.

Id be surprised if they relayed the last mile though, that will not only cost a small fortune but will inconvience the entire country ! I think it is more likely that they will attempt to replace the inter-exchange infrastructure, leaving the last mile as copper pair until it naturally degrades and needs replacing.

Id be quite pleased if they could just get 2Mb to where my parents live TBH. 768K is all they can get atm.

isnt this what they are referring to as the 21CN upgrade, i.e. 21st century network? if so its hardly news, its been underway for a while. if not, then it is. i for one, can wait, the 400kb/sec i was getting last night was nice enough for me.

For at least a couple of years. Its the natural progression from the present situation. In order to do voice over IP properly they need an increase in the upload speed. Fibre optic will give that.

Some are going to have problems in that BT may not be willing to do the line to their house because of expense. For those close to exchanges it shouldnt be difficult. It will improve the situation for those miles away from the nearest exchange though.
