Quote from: CypherXp is based on NT.  2000 was its predacesor.  There is a world of differnece and limitations between NT and 9x.  The features of both previous NT and 9x formed the basis of XP as that was the last 9x OS, thats it. thats the only link between the two.  If anything 2000 was closer to XP.  It was in development before Me was even released.

Im trying to work out what you are saying here.

THe 2 families are the DOS tree and the NT Tree.
i.e 9x & Millenium Edition being in the 9x family, and the NT Family NT4 being the 1st "Proper" NT OS.  2k and XP are all essentially the same OS with a few tweakes, hence their classification as NT5 and NT5.1 (As far as M$ Are concerned they arent far enough apart to be given their own number)

Sorry, Yes thats what I said.

ME wasnt so bad.  If you hacked it enough(like I did) it was actually faster than 98SE!

ME was a quality OS, the people that complained are the same people that think you have to reinstall XP every few months.

Cypher

Fraid not.  I prefer to avoid doing that at all costs.

Did you use ME m8? lol it deserves its worst OS award :)

Vista error messages, are they still meaningless or actually tell you what happened yet?

yay1 that means they may roll out XP SP3 then.  They said they wouldnt be releasing it until they had finished VistaSP1.
Also, service packs do usually add new functionality while also containing the previous hotfixes and patches.  A Service pack will often do a complete replacement of the Kernel with Windows, along with adding things that cant be put in there with a patch.  WinFS for example is supposed to arrive with VistaSp1 and XP SP3, its too big a change to put into a hotfix.  that said, they may hold off with SP3 until they can release the same tech over both OSen.

Anyone got their 5.1 soundcard working properly yet?

it was a major pain when vista first came out, 5.1 only worked with my audigy if you set some environment effects (concert hall crap)

I used it for years, until XP was released, then I got a hooky copy from some guy in college

I used ME on a 700mhz Celeron, Packard Bell PC for years and thought it was great. Bloated and slow to start with but ok after abit of tweaking.

Im getting used to vista now, still dont like the way folders work etc.

one thing that is really doing my head in is if i miss a link when I click it keeps minimising, is that a Vista thing or an over sensitive touch pad?

I tried ME, it kept going wrong. It was some weird mix of NT and 9x that sent the inner geek in me into a weird sense of WTF. Then it crashed, then it got infested with spyware, then I nearly killed my younger brother as he did it not once but TWICE forcing me to re-install again.

It felt like Windows 98 with lots of pointless media enhancements to me. Stuff you didnt use wizards for anyway like uploading photos and keeping pictures in albums. And techie geeks like myself found the command line being gutted and replaced with something else weird. I just found the thing awkward to network to another PC using wireless.

Rumour mill was that sp3 would bring directx10 to xp but all the moaning from MS that Vista aint selling even if they were going to they may pull it to get you to get vista

And why many call vista me2 :) as it sounds similar, has good stuff but to much in places.
