Title: whats everyone doing these days?
Post by: Mongoose on January 27, 2012, 21:33:52 PM
I just posted a technical question over in computing and then realised I have no idea how many if any of us work in IT these days. Naturally if you don't want to say then don't, I'm just being nosey really. I'll start off:

I'm a software developer working for a smallish firm which specialises in science related software. I'm absolutely loving it, actually get up wanting.to go to work in the morning.

Well I'm working for 'Orange' or Everything Everywhere as it is now, managing one of the teams who configure the tariffs, bundles and propositions.

So no longer getting dirty with the actual work, but the advantage being I know how it all does work.

I'm a C# developer working for a multinational oil company. I work with gas traders producing "decision assistance tools" - data, pricing, charting, alerting etc. Also spend a lot of time working on VBA in Excel sheets.

Main IT skills:
- C# (NET4.0)
- SQL
- VBA

EDIT: When I joined the forum I was a year 8 schoolboy with a vague interest in building computers, its a shame all is lots from back then, I'd be amused to read what my first posts were like.

I'm an analyst at a mid size software firm, it's ok but I'm not massively excited by it. Colleagues are interesting/smart, plenty of banter, work place is relaxed but recently less so - has become more secretive, talk of non disclosure crap to sign and extending no-compete clauses - management is a bit paranoid and not keen on people leaving to work for competitors...

Am planning to stay there till summer 2013 then will prob take a year out for a masters nd think of something else to do with my life. Or, if that fails, maybe just contract/work for a client/competitor of my current place and earn some ££££

I work as a 2nd line bod on a Helpdesk in a Solicitors.  Its not a bad job but its not the place to be learning anything new especially server related as its 'not my role' which gets a tad frustrating.  Hopefully things will change over the next year, just had my yearly appraisal and don't think my line manager was overly happy :D  Might have to do if the economy's going up the creak without a paddle again.

I am a web designer and developer. I can design a website and then build it.

My Primary high skills would be : HTML5, canvas, ajax, CSS3, Javascript, jQuery, PHP with some knowledge of .net. Did Java all through uni.
Primarly use the Adobe Business Catalyst system and considered one of the top developers of it. Did a speech about web standards at adobe max last year.
Been asked to do one at an event in Sydney in a few months time too.
Work with the Adobe BC team to help improve the system and push for advancements in the system.
Just learning Liquid which is a coding engine for the CMS in the works which was originally developed by Shopify and used in an number of CMS's now.

Building on my SEO knowledge, SEO is a minefield and very complicated, riddled with disagreements on what works and does not etc.

I'm still in IT, and some of my recent work is designing low cost get reliable wireless networks for nursing homes and cafe's.
Going well so far, my system is in over 30 homes and so far, no failures.
I also do all the regular jazz an it guy does.

Electrician. After school I went to University, that'd didn't work out for me. Finished without honours and after a few months work in an office I became disheartened with the lot of it so I decided to do something else.

I'm enjoying it still, would like to work for myself in the future but right now staying with the company I work for is the best idea. Especially with 2 kids and a big mortgage.

I'm an electrician working for a building company that refurbs pubs and restaurants. I've been an electrician for about 6 years and doing this job for 3months. The money and benefits are amazing but it is pretty boring stuff but we're in a bit of a quiet patch at the moment so I've mostly been doing inspecting and testing

If I had the guts I'd do what Soopha is doing, nuff respect for anyone who can do it successfully.

It's amazing that most of us core users have been here for over 10 years.  I think I'm in my 12th year now as a Tekforums user :)

I'm currently a "Technical Business Consultant" for Santander UK.  In theory I've been with them for 7 years now as I was originally working for Alliance & Leicester. I'm sure a few of you know that Santander took over A&L during the banking crisis.

Simply put I do data mining, report creation and some analytical work.  In a normal week I will probably use at some point, MS Access, MS Excel, VBA, MS SQL Server, Oracle SQL, SAS, Visual Studio(C# and VB Web development) and if I'm really unlucky Business Objects.

Unfortunately, having to use so many different programs means I'm a bit of a jack of all trades, master of none.  Until the take over I was very much on a path of C#/VB web development with SQL Server back ends.  But as Santander were about 5 years behind A&L in terms of MI and report delivery, web pages were almost frowned upon and that meant that for all of last year I didn't finish a single web project.  One that I was working on got turned into a crappy Excel report :(  But as of Friday, my team has been told that we can use web pages as a delivery method again, so here's hoping I can do more of what I enjoyed most.

That said, it's a great place to work and my closest of work colleagues are all top guys.  Not just work colleagues, but some of the best friends I have..... I even live with one! As others have said, I actually look forward to going into work most days

Mate it is been a pleasure helping you get into it!
Your open minded and learning stuff so quick, I just want to see you in a place where you get given some awesome designs to make up and get to use some good systems to build sites with!
You will get even better still then! Where you are is slowing you down mate.

I stack shelves at poundland in the day and work the streets of Nottingham at night, you may pity me but repetetive tasks and brutal anal are both my passions in life.

On a more serious note I hope I find the drive to change my career in the near future as IT despite 'paying the bills' and giving me a comfortable lifestyle is pretty much my passion 10 years ago, not now.

I don't have a job because employers are penises.

According to one stuck up Odeon manager, because I'm 18 and never had a job before, that means no matter how good a candidate I'd be, I'm not employable.

However I should be going to Uni next year! :D

Its because your educated, you know a good education scares a manager who has zero GCSE's! You might be after their job. :P

I find thats usually an excuse if they think you are too good for the job, they think you will get bored and move on and that its not worth investing time in someone like that!

I work for a large IT company in my current role i'm a "technical security consultant" or in geek language a Penetration Tester/ethical hacker/white hat.

Nowhere near as fun as the movies make it out to be, but it's an interesting job.

Have been a bit of a jack of all trades over the years, nice to actually get a specialism.

Awesome. I'm just in Newcastle full time now.

This is one for knighty. Remember that crazy bloke who had the 106 Rallye S1? Ever hear what happened to him or what he was called?

I'm living in Heaton now and just remember that night when we went out and his driving left something to the imagination.

andy roll ?.... LOL

I sold him my bmw mega cheap as a favour on the condition I'd buy it back for the same price when he was done with it.... (had a years MOT on it and TAX)
a year later I bought it back (just before MOT/TAX time).... and he complained about having to put a new battery on it and wanted more money out of me! (which he didn't get....)

but... he'd totally destroyed the car :-(

kinda stopped talking to him after that !

I'm sure there was some other stuff I can't even remember now.... I decided just to cut my losses with him tbh

So back on topic :P

My job involved managing a 3rd party team, however the team as a whole did have some permanent staff members reporting in to a few managers for different delivery streams, however due to some reorganisation in the team all of the staff needed to report in to one people manager, so I applied for the role and I got it!

I'm really looking forward to it as I haven't done people management for a while now, and I now have a team that have a lot of potential but haven't been given the chance to expand, and I'm going to make sure they have a chance to and enjoy their job much more!
