I know weve had this thread before but I cant remeber and it is interesting to see what people are up to. Also if they enjoy what they do.
I am an electrician and absolutly love my job, dont know if it is the work or the people I work with. I work in some absolute dives at times aswell but I look forward to everyday.
3rd line desktop support.. the 1st and 2nd line are useless so we end up doing that as well. Cant say i look foward to it as its all remote and i prefer hands on and server stuff.

I have changed jobs, probably several times since the last thread.
I was a car salesman I quit, got a admin job with the RPA (http://www.rpa.gov.uk) I quit that and got a job with EDS (http://www.eds.com/) and then got fired from there for "my lateness and attitude" but basically I argued valid points with the managment who had very little give in them
Now I have a job back at the RPA on The Processed Goods Section (http://www.rpa.gov.uk/rpa/index.nsf/UIMenu/D7748D8EB412EC9C80256F72003D72A0?Opendocument)
Not worked for 3 years been on the sick.

Nope on my section we deal with mainly sugar and milk.
Take a look here and these will tell you if you can claim. You dont need a Refund Certificate either, but you will need to register a trader number and then you can claim from the small exporters reserve, upto €75,000.
You need to export it to a non EU country though and you do need proofs depending on the route it takes.
Have a look at ET17 PDF file for the product codes. Page 83 on mine but down near the bottom the section called "the lists"
Im the Network Administrator at a local school.
Quote from: mr_roll(snip)
I don;t want to export any... I just want inside info on tallow prices... I was getting 5p a liter... but over the last year Ive argued my way up to 8p/liter.... just want more info to see how hard to push for more !
(we do 5000l/week)

but the items that get exported that I process arnt payment for the items, they are a "refund" otherwise known as a subsidary for the item being exported. So the amount will be different and its set by the EU to help exporting from the EU to outside the EU.
Electrical retail at the minute, but hopefully that will be changing soon. Doesnt pay enough, but I get to play with some nice HD tellies :)
IT Manager for Irelands largest indigenous call centre (And apparently fastest growing company) - 1065 staff and shortly to rise to 1400. I have a team of 13 desktop, server, telephony and network engineers, and 2 developers.

IT Technician in a School, on an ok wage for what I do especially since 90% of it at the mo involves sitting on my arse being bored stiff. Also the two reasons Im looking for a new job, need more money and need something to actually do am getting sick of doing nowt.
Im a CEM Quote Specialist............ dont ask.
EDS are a bunch of wnkers for the most part, never met anyone who says otherwise.
I do it engineer/support type work.
who are EDS? I said Logica CMG :) Completely different company mate :)
Quote from: sdpEDS are a bunch of wnkers for the most part, never met anyone who says otherwise.
I disagree, at least wnkers can do something right. I prefer to think of them as being on the same level as the fluff you get between your toes at the end of the day.
Im unemployed and waiting for a start-date for the 2nd/3rd line job, wouldnt have accepted it, but im skint and the job looks reasonable. Still mainly phone-monkey work, but untill ive ticked off the CCNA and MSCE im a bit stuck, though they have said they will pay for me to do the Citrix certs as well, so i may hang around for a year or two.
I was refering to Mr_Rolls post.
Im a deputy project manager for some logistics systems for... you guessed it... EDS
ahh @ sdp :D lol.
and double Ahhh @ bigsoy! :D lol.
Quote from: mr_rollEDS and then got fired from there for "my lateness and attitude" but basically I argued valid points with the managment who had very little give in them
How can you have valid points for bad attitude & lateness? I work closely a lot with EDS staff as we work in the same data centre. You dont become a global company by putting up with lateness & bad attitude. Theres nothing worse than having to work with someone whos never on time & just slags everything/body off. I managed to get a someone simlair to that sacked for his behaviour. He was supposed to be bringing me some server parts (less than an hour away) 3hours later, still no parts or a phone call. I didnt need the parts in the end & when I phoned to cancel the parts, the guy hadnt even turned up (he lives 10mins from the distro place). Put a call in & he was gone by the end of the week.
Instead of thinking about yourself about slacking, think about those your actions effect. I got deadlines. I dont meet them, I dont get paid. I dont have the choice to argue "valued points".
Erm.. So who exactly works with/for/onbehalf of EDS???
BigSoy seems to... SDP does, I do indirectly!
anyone else?
Computer Science student (for another few months) and part time 118118 Level 3 Customer Service Representative. Its better pay that anything else that will give me 16hrs a week and not all that bad; its boring as hell but you can switch off for most of it.
Applying to graduate jobs in financial institutions in London for next year.
SDP doesnt.
Id consider it if I dont get this logica position :)

I did wonder that myself - in my experience EDS isnt even a particularly strict place to work in terms of clocking in and out etc (Not sure whats it like on the service side so much though). If you cant manage to turn up reliably at EDS, not sure where you will turn reliably to!

I did for a grant total of 3 weeks. People think its some kind of Hotshot IT Firm, when in fact its a mindless management hub. Much the same as CSC, Accenture and the other globals. It doesnt matter if you know what you are doing, they just want mindless drones who dont have an initiative.
afaik Im blacklisted for eds now :D. I wouldnt wanna work for them again anyway, they treated people really like sh*t and the agency they use now is Evil, imo.
I *heard* the middle-management guys would phone up the bestest guys out in the field and say, without any reason, I want so-n-so done in 2hrs time, if it aint then youre sacked.
I *heard* loads of contractors get sacked simply because the guys in the buddy-club dont like them.
I *heard* something about a bloke getting shafted with a 4month suspension for losing a tool.
I *heard* theyll constantly move the goal posts. Like I heard if they want rid of a few contractors cos a job is winding down, instead of phoning ppl up theyll up the work load, change the overtime rules and commuting distance until only the biggest mugs are left.
This may all just be rumour. Ive got a really bad cough today. The problem is there are so many engineers out there with the skills they need that the engineers are pretty much expendable.
I was working for EDS through an Agency, we were told Id be working about 5 miles from where I was living, which I just got my car was great.
So I turn up for work on time and was late only a few times, by about 2 minutes, once by only about 30 seconds.
Then they needed to do work on the PCs at that location, which because of red tape it took about 4 months for some reason. So we had to travel to another location, I OFFERED to give people lifts down to this other centre they had which was a 21 mile drive from the other centre.
I started off picking people up, but found that took to long so I just picked everyone up at the main center and drove the 20 mile journey, in rush hour traffic I may add.
Anyway, the managers got shirty with me and started this thing where they said "you now have 2 start times" So Id have to pick people up at the 1st place and get to the 2nd place for a certain time and since it was rush hour it was stressful. I wasnt prepared to do this as I was also responsible for the time keeping of the people in my car So I stopped driving people down, but thats ok, got a lift off some one else who had a Scooby.
Then because there was a woman on my team who was sexier than me, they decided to give her more opportunities and they just stook me on with the normal work.
I kept asking for more responsibility but they just didnt listen.
Oh and I wasnt putting points forward that would help them deliver a faster service to their client.
On one occasion also I remeber I was a little warm so I went up to the manager and said "Is there any chance of me getting a fan as Im a little hot" The manager laughed in my face and said "are you joking?" I said "no" I actually pestered him so much the guy from the building services dept came up and messured the temprature with a digital thermometer and found it was 1 degree hotter than what it should have been.
I got the aircon turned down and not many people liked me in that part of the office after that.
I found the grunts on the floor got along with me, where as the managers just didnt like me at all or my suggestions.
Hopefully Ill never work for an American company anymore, but EDS were the worst.
There are more stories I can think of but tbh I cant be bothered typing those out and there is lots of petty stuff but all together it really did get me down.
Im an Unemployed retard.
