Not as good (comparatively) as the old one (In its day) but just got ordered a Dell XPS M1330 with white-led backlit screen, 4GB RAM, 320GB disk and gimmicks such as fingerprint scanner and webcam. Its nice and thin as well.

I ordered my laptop 09/07/2007, I have had 3 replacements, seen the dell engineer more times than I have cared to mention and still have issues with the laptop I have now (the base isnt straight, its a common problem as is the whining CPU)

Look out for exposed internals through shody construction, wobbly bases and the dreaded cpu whine.

Using a XPS M1710 (quite old now - ?1 yr?) and had no problems with it at all and it gets abused physically and computationally.  So there are some good XPSs out there  

The 1710 does seem good, just too big for work though as I spend most of my time on the road

15 is about as big as I dare!

The most frustrating thing is, the 1330 is an brilliant bit of kit, but is riddled with issues.

It seems if you dont get one, you get another

All mine have had whining CPUs so far, and seriously if you have to ring dell good luck, because they are god damn awful with hold times I hear, drop them a mail and get them to ring you! and on that note only talk to them unless you HAVE to, with that said the Irish XPS support arent too bad at all.

Yeah its huge, gets very hot and the battery life is a bit embarassing.  Its a desktop replacement really but made me rate the XPS laptop line very highly (they are basically alienware laptops anyway).

cant remember who it was on here that said Dell had learned a lesson from Alienware, and the quality was way better.  You would be the 6th person ive know that has issues with a high-end Dell laptop, 2 of them with XPS machines, and a the rest with the high-end Vostro machines.  

Im sticking with HP, at least if they dont screw me around, and their support rocks a big fat one.

I see a a lot of Lattitude and Vostro models through our office and I dont think I have had any build quality issues?

Though one client commented the power button was loose?

Id be lying if I never said I;ve never called out a dell engineer on a new Lattitude and ended up arguing with the head of UK support/repairs.  Whatever his job title was, when the engineer that came made it worse.  In the sense that it didnt even turn on after replacing a mobo.

2 of the same model with the same flickery screen issue, one of them has been back to Dell twice and they say there is no fault.  One with a keyboard that didn;t work out of the box that took 3 weeks to get back.  One that didnt even post, that one just got returned when they said 2 weeks until a replacement was ready.  The XPS machines have the same fault as well, the screen backlights are again flickering, and once more Dell say there is no problem.  

My cheapy HP works flawlessly all the while, as does my old Acer 1670 series.  Neither of them cost the same as any of the Dell machines.
