I love this! :)

Found my Windows 2K3 Enterprise trial edition pack, including well W2K3 enterprise server, along with XP, and exchange, and sharepoint and other business related stuff.

Decided to install VMWare Server (free to download and use, just need to register for a licence key but can request for as many as you want), and install myself a Win 2k3 Server for development purposes.

I am loving it, think I may actually think about buying something beefy for my next pc, purely to run Virtual Machines. Something server like, doesnt need graphics power, just storage, processor, and ram :) Nice :D

Ill install office 2k7 trial in an XP virtual machine, and voila... when it expires (60 days), Ill just rebuild the machine. :)

Linux... again, virtual machine.

Lovely stuff.

i mix them up a little.  the desktop machine is running win98 in MS Virtual PC 2007.  its reasonable for a basic install, and its quicker than a cat with its tail on fire.  However VMWare is overall the much better product.  Must see how my lappy handles it.

Could do but dont have a trial version of vista here, and vista is a bit of a beast to run in a VM.

I do a lot of work with large scale virtualisation

Platespin is one of our big products

Its ESX where I work as the main contender.

Excellent timing for me, this thread !

Ive used VirtualPC before to run Win98 VMs inside a XP host. Does the free VMWare solution work in the same way ?

Im just about to take ownership of a new development machine and Ill be looking to run XP (primary OS) and then a couple of different Linux VMs as well.
Will that be easy to accomplish with the free VMware ?

edit:
Ignore the above I have just downloaded and installed VMWare and downloaded and opened a Ubuntu Gutsy application !! I am posting from FF in Ubuntu :D

This is much much easier than VirtualPC and my PentD w/ 2gb of ram appears to be coping quite well !

...now I just need to figure out how to release input focus back to the host PC ! lol

I use Xen for all my virtulisation needs (apart from a windows install on my workstation which I use VMware)

Virtual Servers rock.  Everyone should have one :)

Well I thought it might be time to have a look at this Vista thing everyone is on about. So I created a new VM and put it on...
...apparently it is a little bit more resource hungry than Ubuntu as it feels like a dog whilst running.
Hopefully my quad core machine will be ready soon then I can retry this Vista VM :)

I simply Use Virtual PC so I can get at an XP/ME/200/98 etc OS in a few minutes when needed, rather than grabbing another PC all the time.

Office 2k7 does actually run on XP.
