Was this actualy a real thing?

Clock'd 0Ne

They should recall all 1998 Renault Clios. Period. Melt them and start again.

Beaker

it was probably a marketing stunt to point out that a lot of Mk1s are still driving about.

Mark

Far more old french cars on the road than old golfs

back that up with statistics and make em valid or its just forum speak.

Matt

Mark

Generally being awake is enough for me.

Seeing as we may well do - maybe - up to 500 cars a year, going to one of the maybe 30 scrapyards or maybe 100 dealers I would go to a year I would see far more of them

At that extreme age it would be tight, but certainly early to mid eighties - 309s, 205s etc etc - they go on forever, especially the diesels.

I dont know if it would be possible to get stats from anywhere

the fact is - when they first came out, VWs were competing with cars that were poorly built - due to industrial action and what not - nowadays theyre no better than the likes of anything ford or vauxhall do, except they are exceptionally overpriced. The reputation for reliability has stuck.

Liam

Strangely i dont think i have seen an MK1 Golf for years - cannot even remember seing one last where i live but i have seen them in other areas of the UK but the most common 80s cars i still see being driven around as Mark said are 205s commonly etc.

and youre not even going to try and google for stats, so well just rely on your opinion eh?!

how many french cars were produced during your chosen period? how many VW?
what percentage of french are still on the roads? versus vw? etc etc.

I wish there were a way to check that, cos i dont believe your statement.

Mark

then you obviously dont be outside much.

Edd

i can believe that, you still see the old 505s and those pug vans around

altho i see a sh*t load of bus and old VWs around here cause there is a VW festival down the road from me every year

All you have to do is check customer satisfaction ratings, VWs arent top anymore, at least not on the ones I have seen - those that are almost inevitably come from the far east.

Example

36     Volkswagen Golf < highest rated VW
    49     Volkswagen Polo < next

he shoots, he misses. marks statement was, far more french cars are on the road than old golfs.

strictly speaking, there were a hell of a lot more peugout and citroens build than vw golfs. its not a very subjective statement. so to reference what owners think of their cars in terms of reliability doesnt even count.

Beaker

I would agree that there are probably more 1990 era french cars still on the roads, however ive not seen a really old 205 or similar for ages. Only person I know with a Pug even approaching that age is a C-Reg 205 with a Dimma kit.
