Ive used one of those and they are truly superb lenses.  About a grand over-priced there though...

What I was looking for was something from 70-120mm zooming up to 300-400mm. Problem is there is rather a lot of options in this range and while I dont need the best I do want something thats worthwhile. I keep ending up looking at an image stabilised Sigma 120-400mm lens thats priced on that site at nearly £500. Unfortunately I cant justify that price.

Im not sure about the 120-400 until I see some reviews (admittedly I cant afford it either so I havent been looking in case Im tempted!) The 135-400 it replaces wasnt particularly stunning. Id be inclined to go for something shorter but better/cheaper.

The Sigma 70-300APO and Tamron 75-300 DiII get consistantly good reviews, AFAIK the Tamron is sharper but the Sigma has less chromatic aberation.

Serious

I was siding towards Tamron, but the 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD. I dont really need the quality of the Sigma and the price saving is considerable but there is the issue of stabilisation.

Its an issue that can wait though.

My sisters boyfriend has the Tamron for his Canon 400, its a very nice lens, particularly for the price. I suspect we are both refering to the same one and I just got the specs slightly wrong....yup looking at SRS Microsystems it does seem to be 70-300 not 75 as I had thought.

Sigma have recently started doing their own optical stabilisation system but I dont think its on any of their cheaper lenses yet. Just one of those specs Im very glad I dont have to think about, since my Pentax takes care of the stabilisation in the body. :P

I bought a Canon EF 75-300mm f4-5.6 III USM Lens today. Shockingly the prices for these have rocketed but PC World had one for under the £130 squid mark.

The lens is quite adequate for what I want.

Serious

Went into a local Jacobs yesterday, they wanted £249.99 for the above lens

Mine seems adequate but is a little rough on one part of the zoom.

prices for camera kit in general have been shooting up, its partly due to the weakness of the pound.

Some sigma lenses have gone up 50%, Pentax stuff is up ~20%, presumably Canon are doing the same.

I know, but Sigma basically dont make anything else, a couple of flash guns and a very unsuccessful line of camera bodies.

times is hard :( :( :(
