Hey all,

Ive been doing a bit of research on how to change the OS on my Binatone Carrera C350 to the better TomTom. So far ive found out I need to do the following:
Quoteyou need to put files on memory card, first make new folder on memorycard called explorer.exe, then if u search google you will easily find tomtom files(just look for tomtom for pda). When u have ur files your memorycard should look like this-
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
explorer.exe
tomtomnavigator ( i use 6 but you can install tom7)
great_britainv?????? ( depending on what version u use)
guam
windows
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is this correct? Does anyone have a link to any how-to guides or DL links?

Cheers

Im guessing its not based on a windows mobile platform? If it was Id have thought the usual sources should have what you need? Its possible to get TT7 on the SE Xperia X1 etc, even though TT7 is only officially supported on a certain other model of phone.

ERU

It says on the side of the box that its running on Win CE 5.0

Im absolutely clueless about these. Seems there are loads of versions of TomTom and only a few are going to work on mine? I just want to make sure im loading the latest version I can - mainly new maps! Argh where do I start?

Hmm, I think its possible to run TT6/7 off of SD cards and the likes, if your device has one of them.

Can you use MS Activesync to connect to it on a computer? If so I think usual sources explain the install procedure and it should work, just obviously make a back up of all the files on device first!

ERU

I CAN connect it to my PC with the USB cable that came with it. It also has a SD-Card slot - although has a 700mb odd internal memory.

So far ... I have copied all the files I saw off the device and onto my computer to back them up. I hope its just a case of copying them back if needed.

I then copied all the files (mentioned above) I could find via google directly onto the internal memory and did a reset. The problem is I seem to have the same menus as before i.e, Travel Kit, Settings and GPS Im a bit worried there isnt an actual Windows CE 5.0 menu here - dod i need to do something to access it? The only difference after doing this now being that when I click GPS nothing now happens. Before it went into the old SatNav. Seriously - I have no idea how to go about doing this.

Ive just started a new job whereby I get called up and go at a moments notice each morning to be greeted with a new client and destination. I cant be late! The other SatNav software was crap i.e. avoiding a main road today .. I REALLY need to sort this :(

zpyder

Hmm. Might it be worth looking into whether its possible to flash the device to use Windows mobile and the likes?

Also, you could try installing MS Activesync (I think its free off of MSs site) and see if it recognises the device. If it does, the typical PDA installer found from usual sources for TT should work?

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/647390 seems to explain a process or two in better detail than I could I guess.

filbert

Ive seen it done on a navigo, you put all the files on the sd card, then run the bat file(i think thats it).

ERU

I think ive given up with this - it seems blocked.

When the device loads up im presented with a three option menu (inc photos and settings) and choose GPS. It works fine if it has the Binatone files (on the resident flash) on it but wont do anything if I swap them with the TomTom ones. Conclusion ... its blocked! :(

zpyder

Thats a shame. There must be a way, but I am guessing its probably such a weird and lengthy process it borders on the arcane.

Quote from: Google cacheAre you a fan of neither getting lost nor spending money? Then read on!

The Binatone X350 is available from Asda for £50, or perhaps even £25 as they seem to be on a clearance (they were still £50 in Asda Cwmbran where mine came from). They are £58 from Amazon. Damned cheap, I hope you will agree. First off, I must admit it isn't perfect:

battery life is average at a few hours or so; be prepared to use the (included) car charger. It might improve after a few charge cycles I suppose.
GPS signal strength is also mediocre, notably weaker than my SiRFStar III unit. It couldn't get a signal when charging in the passenger footwell of my car, whereas my SiRFStar will work indoors, which isn't supposed to be possible.
Probably because of the signal strength, it takes quite a long time (five minutes or so) between bootup and lock-on.
These are only really niggles though, and in light of the price point I don't think they really matter. The biggest problem is that the included software isn't very good, but it's trivially easy to install TomTom on it instead thanks to the good guys at Binatone. It turns out that if an SD card is inserted, and that SD Card has a folder called MobileNavigator containing a file called MobileNavigator.exe, the Binatone GPS will (at boot time) load that EXE in place of the one built in to the unit.

Step-by-step instructions to get TomTom running are below. You'll need an SD card of at least 512Mb capacity.

Format SD card to FAT16 — first time I did this with the card formatted to FAT32, it didn't work, and I think this helps. You'll need about 280Mb of space
Download the file from this site (they have BitTorrent or HTTP downloads) and extract it onto your hard disk.
Copy the contents of the zip file onto the SD card
Rename the TomTom directory to "MobileNavigator"
Delete "navigator.exe"
Rename "navigator_unchanged.exe" to "MobileNavigator.exe"
Insert the SD card in your device and power it off and on with the small switch on the back. Select Navigation and you should see TomTom load
During the install process, it will ask what sort of Bluetooth receiver you have. Select "Other NMEA Receiver, set the baud rate to maximum (115,200), and select COM7
That's it!
I am informed these instructions also work for the Navigo satnavs, which are available cheaply from a number of online retailers. If you need further help, you're best off posting in The PC Tailor forums.

I also have this link for a download for TomTom 7 which I haven't tried yet. The file has a set of instructions with it that look somewhat more involved, but the maps for TomTom v6 are no longer updated so v7 is probably preferable.

(Note that although the instructions mention the Navigo GPS unit, the Binatone device works the same way. The instructions should work just the same.)
