I knew their work in the Efficent Dymanics department was amazing but Christ.

60mph sprint in 4.8 seconds and a limited top speed of 155mph, while returning the equivalent of 75.1mpg

Best thing about all this and other technologies to reduce emissions are that they now see ways to do all this and actually be even faster and produce bigger bursts of speed faster then current motor engines.

knighty

its a bit of a cheat tho....

75mpg... if you charge the batteries up at home....

set it so it doesent charge them while you drive....

and then take it pretty easy....

itll be like the prius vs the M3 round the top gear track... the ME came out with more MPG :o

Cypher

The Prius vs The M3 was just them having a stab at drivers that want to be flashing their Green credentials, but then go and drive it quickly.

For an M3 to follow a Prius a top speed to 3 laps, I doubt it would have gotten over 3000 RPM.

I can get between 20 and 60 MPG out my 1.9TDI depending on where and how Im driving.  The common misconception is that a smaller engine will be more efficent no matter what,  but if your going to put your foot down then it is going to be a lot less efficent and working harder than a larger capacity engine.

The Prius everyone is aware of because it a Social Engineering product appealing on the Green level.  In no way does it appeal to any one who knows anything about cars, or really takes them seriously.  If I wanted to do 60MPG 70MPG everywhere and not pay £16K, Id buy a Diesel Polo or low end Golf.

I wouldnt call this a new type of engine, more an application of current technologies in a Hybrid Solution.

In my opinion anything like this is great but a distraction and detour to what is inevitably going to be Hydrogen Fuel Cell based engines.

This, though one of my mates just bought a BMW 120 deisel, and hes trying to push the MPG down below 50.  Its refusing to go!

the biggest joke is - a 1989 citroen AX diesel does over 100mpg.

Old tech, mechanical injection.

soopahfly

I couldnt give less of a sh*t how many MPG my car does.
Its not why I drive.

The wife however does.

bear

My old 1996 Passat TDI does 50 mpg.

Not quite, one did manage it by dragging out every drop they could, for which it got into the Guiness Book of Records. A more realistic figure would be 55-65mpg when being driven sensibly.
