but not necessarily eating any peaches....

Due to epic amounts of poorness lately and coming to the end of our current tenancy agreement were thinking about moving out to a rural area. Theres some houses in villages outside of Shrewsbury that could save us up to £170 a month on rent which believe me right now would make huge amounts of difference. Were not big socialites so wouldnt miss being close to pubs and town etc.. and Im figuring being 15 minutes from Tesco can only help curb our monthly outgoings. The idea is to get somewhere between Shrewsbury and Oswestry (where I work) so it will reduce our petrol costs too. Just trying to think of any unforeseen downpoints really.

Pros
Cheap rent
Quiet! (Currently next to noisy pub)
Safer for the cats
Closer to work (well for me!)
Lower council tax
Less temptation to spend - tesco, food delivery etc..

Cons
No pub! (In the places were looking at)
Country lanes - nasty in winter
Current house is REALLY nice and big
Might have to get rid of arcade machine and study/music studio...
Pain to go to shops if you need something quick
Probably need bigger mower....
Oil central heating - is this bad?

If we could cope with this we could be debt free inside 2 years at which point wed have a load more money freed up from monthly payments so its really looking like a good idea. Just wondered if anyone had any input or thoughts on anything we havent considered?

Tbh the one about if you need something is a bit redundant, youll soon get used to having things like spare bulbs for everything and batteries, assuming that you live in the middle of a town/city atm and often just pop out and walk 100 yards to a shop at the moment.

Country lanes might be a bit of a challenge though if they arent gritted. Depends just HOW rural you want to be though. You might find somewhere just off of a main road? No pub will save you money too. Might help save your liver as well ;)

Were looking at a few but I really dont want to live in OS. Maybe the rural outskirts but not the town.

thing to remember is, you don;t have to live there (in the house you choose) forever... youll be much better off in a few years and will have a better choice of places to live.. somewhere to spend a long time etc... :)

Dont worry about the roads, buy chains for your car/s then smile at the townies stuck in the snow  :w00t:

Just viewed a place 10 mins from work. Awesome cottage, incredible views over the country side, absolutely silent at rush hour... perfect except for the fact that the gate posts were so narrow
I could barely fit the punto through! Had to 2 point it to get in! The good ladies non power sterring fisi wouldnt have a chance! Damn shame - was awesome apart from that. Oh although it had its own orchard that Id have to mow and it looked like A LOT of work!!

Surely something like that is relatively quick to remedy with a sledgehammer?

Oh my sentiments exactly! Sadly its part of a driveway estate through to the owners lodge so theyre WELL fussy about appearences and that was a big no no.

Thats a shame. Not having house hunted before does it help to mention you like the place but the driveway was a challenge, in the sense of knocking prices down or negotiating to have a larger driveway?

If your buying perhaps, renting your usual fighting to get a place so you have to sell yourself more than the other way round (unless its a hit hole!)

Serious

Cons
No pub! (In the places were looking at) - buy drink in cans/bottles, youll save money
Country lanes - nasty in winter - get a snowboard
Current house is REALLY nice and big - expensive to keep warm
Might have to get rid of arcade machine and study/music studio... - Garden shed
Pain to go to shops if you need something quick - this is probably the only issue get yourself a big freezer and shove some microwave meals in. Theyre horrible but you can live on them. Get some powder whitener for when the milk runs out.
Probably need bigger mower.... - spend more time mowing, and use the grass cuttings for something, or go for a nature garden.
Oil central heating - is this bad? - Not exceptionally, depends on the oil used.
