Potentially going to come into a bit of cash soon and once Ive paid off the overdraft I have about enough to stretch to selling my Yaris and I am looking at the possibility of getting an RX-8 as Im really craving a (Jap) Coupé at the moment.

Anyone have any experience / opinion on them... What to look for / what to avoid etc?!

Cheers,

Jaimz

You need a full, complete, very comprehensive service history with the rotary engine. They are cracking little units but only if they have been maintained properly and looked after.

Sadly they are pretty thirsty (most people seem to average around 20 mpg), go through a fair bit of oil and have quite high insurance for what they are, but they are lovely cars.

Theyre bad little cars, like an mx-5 but blokey - its not a true coupe though and apparently has naff all torque at the low end? Still I bet theyre awesome to drive fast down B roads. If it was me Id try both engine variations; theyre weird.

Cars to have a go in, imo;

Cooper S
BMW M3
Skyline

I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

You could probably pick up an R32/R33 Skyline for RX8 monies.

DEViANCE

They look awesome but the engine lets it down for me. I bet its fun, revvy and powerfull but the service intervals, repair costs and reliability just arnt worth it imo.

I would be looking at Honda S2000 or Nissan 350z or possibly an Evo

Walrusbonzo

If I was looking these days its either be a Honda S2000 or a R32 Skyline.

RX8s are ugly and as everyone else has said, the engine is nothing to get excited about, except with all the servicing bills and oil top ups.

get a jag

my new company car as of yesterday... cant see the boss letting me keeping it for
to long... as its better than his company car.

Going to enjoy it when I can. Believe it or not, I drive slower because its so nice to drive.
Love the in built car kit for my mobile/sat nav/radio tuner thingy in the middle.

Maldonado

After rejecting...
mx-5
S2000
VX220 / elise
350Z

I decided that an RX-8 is the one for me... Once i have some cash :/

IIRC you;re a big bloke too, RX-8 will fit you nicely. Im 6foot and cant have one with a sunroof because it protrudes too far into the cabin, but without a sunroof is great. You can push the seat back really far and theyre nice and wide.

Ahh but Ben, I never took you for a spin in mine :D

What is the budget?

If its over 6k, get an evo. If its over 10k, get an R33 GTR

If its under that, get a 200SX.

Beaker

Brother in law has one, its nice enough to drive even though Im fairly tall (Im 63" tall, and fit in fine).  Real downsides are the fuel economy (20-25mpg in town), and the fact if you want some speed youve to rag the engine.  Also the brother in law has had hot starting issues, which have also effected one of the other guys I know who has one.

Nice cars though, if you can deal with the very short service intervals, and the niggles.

Depends on what you view as a coupe, to me thats a 2 door saloon not a coupe
