I finally got around to getting another cyclocomputer for the singlespeed. My last Cat-Eye Mity was stolen five years ago.

I got a simple Sigma BC506, with dual display. It shows the speed and another function like distance, at the same time. Uber cheap and quite impressive kit.

Well see how it holds up, my expectations are low for $13.

Yarr, I use a BC1606:

I have found it to be most excellent.  It replaced a Raleigh Pro 7 (rebranded OEM thing) that I liked a lot, but this is minty :)

I saw that one, but wasnt willing to shell out 10 more measly dollars. I often tire of computers and remove them anyway.

Does the 1606 allow for two different wheel sizes so you can share it among your stable with an extra bayonette mount? I might be tempted to upgrade in a few months if thats so. As it is, its only really to track training, as I really dont need to know how far it is to the store. :P

Yep, does 2 wheel sizes.  You can either change wheel size in the menu manually, or shell out for the "2nd bike kit" - basically another sensor and handlebar mount with a contact in a different place so the computer can tell which bike its on.  You can get a cadence kit for it too, at about a fiver.  Id get one, but Ive got no idea what cadence I should be doing anyway :D

maximusotter

Count how many revolutions in 6 seconds, then X 10. Theres your cadence kit. Higher cadence is better usually, but if your butt starts bobbing, either its too high, or your form is lousy. :P

The "experts" say that 50-70 is a good cruising cadence, but when you need torque, like when climbing, 90 or so is a good place to start.

I like a high cadence for the workout factor, so I usually spin at close to 90 on the flats, which gets me 18-20mph or so. For a century effort, Id probably gear down if I was riding a singlespeed and rock a 42x17 instead of my current 16T cog.

Well, according to the puter, which I calibrated by measuring the wheel circumference while sitting on the bike, Ive been lying a heck of a less than I thought I was.

My claimed rides of 30 miles have been 28, and my claimed average speed of 20mph for such a ride dropped to 19.5mph.

I could have been more hyperbolic. Dang.

Interesting to note that the 42x16 ratio is pretty comfy for a large range of speed. It feels natural from 13-23mph, but its spinnable up to 27mph or so before things get insane. :D

Neat! So its automagic? Very tempting!

I have to say, Im very happy with this unit compared to my old Avocets and Mitys. The simplicity is the best, and being able to have both speed and trip distance on the display rocks. I miss average speed, but its not like its hard to figure out as you have trip time recorded with trip distance.

Its one of the best impulse buys I ever got for the bike. The worst was the bogus $20 Stella Azzurra Tecno Spugna tape I got a year ago. Cinelli cork or any number of cheaper equivalents are far superior in comfort and looks.

Best tape Ive used is the Profile Design stuff.  Its more supportive and a lot less prone to tearing and peeling up than Cinelli.

Well, the puter is having the desired effect. My usual ride on the single used to be around 20 miles, but Ive done a couple 30 milers now that I see the results on the display and today I did my record distance on a single speed, 40 miles. :w00t: :D Crappy average time due to stormy winds, only about 17mph, but I dont feel sore at all. Might be time to plan for a single speed century ride. :D :D
