Hollywood is going to try (again) to make Dune into a popular film.

I love the 1984 original, although not enitrely accurate to the book.
Reading the novel later only added further depth the whole story.

Another crappy remake to add to the ignore list!

Everything is a remake now just so they can cover the fact they dont have any original ideas left.

Last year alone I think only District 9 and Moon were the only movies that actually got my attention.

I read the books in the late 70s, hard to make a movie from
without a very large budget I would think.

Speakng of old SiFi  have anyone read the Riverworld books ?

Never made it to the movies well.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riverworld_%28film%29

I *still* dont get Dune, having read the first 6 books in the series, the 1984 film, and the Sci-Fi channels remake and messiah/Children of Dune follow-up :(

It cant be said I didnt try to like the stories, but I dont get the hype, its a good yarn, but its not as good as some people make it out to be in my humble opinion.

Riverworld sounds interesting, though having read the synopsis I wonder why there are flowering plants on a planet with only worms and fish? :D

Quixoticish

I admit its getting a bit tiresome that everything is getting re-made but that said there are some cracking re-inventions/re-boots/re-imaginings out there, last years Star Trek for example.

You didnt like Up?
It's all fun and games until a 200' robot dinosaur shows up and trashes Neo-Tokyo... Again.

Long time since I read Riverworld, I liked it though, like the way historical people is thrown in like, Samuel Clemens (aka. Mark Twain), Herman Göring etc.

Im a big fan of Lynchs Dune and while I dont feel I understand it all fully having never read the books, its still very enjoyable. I also enjoyed the followup sci-fi features (which I still need to give you back zpyder!).

Rather than remaking it, it would be nicer as Egg said to go back and produce a LOTR style three parter perhaps out of the original footage, but this will never happen...

The problem is, there is simply too much story to fit into a 2/3 hour film, any remake is going to be laughable regardless of who is producing/directing it, no matter how good the leading roles.

He would never let it happen, he hates how it came out.

He never understood the story. The mordeep stuff in his movie while is cool is not what is in the book, he simplified it.
There are no wierding modules in the book, he brought that in. In the books it is all about daggers and stealth and they have hoods, He did not use them as he felt it would hide their faces to much.

So while I enjoy Dune the movie it has quite a lot of things off the mark with the actual story. You should watch the Dune mini series and then Children of Dune as well Nige. They are good but not great but reflect the books a lot better.
A mix of the two with more of the actual story and a good 300/clash of the titans/modern style to it taking a lot of what Lynch did in his movie to heart that worked and I think you would end up with a great movie.
Key is it needs the budget or it will end up crap.

zpyder

He has seen the Sci-fi ones, as he mentioned, as I leant him the DVDs ;)

Serious

I doubt if they will achieve anything better than the 1984 version and could end up with something far worse.
