OK so iphone contract has run out, what smartphone should I go with next?

Will likely unlock iphone and still use it too as have a couple of ideas for apps etc...

am thinking along the lines of new dell or HTC running android...

or perhaps the nokia N900 - running linux!!!!!

I really cant fault my HTC Desire. I dont regret for one second getting it. Mind you coming from an X1, anything is an improvement.

BigSoy

Desire for the Win Tbh.

Seriously rapid, full multitasking, great social network integration (email, facebook, twitter, flickr, amazon MP3 etc), better screen than 3GS and better facilities for maintaining battery life (which is the only minor negative).

Not to mention the awesome weather animations on the Home Screen :D
"Within your 'purview'? Where do you think you are, some f**king regency costume drama? This is a government department, not some f**king Jane f**king Austen novel!"

I think you have to wait until friday for the Dell Streak to be released and see what price its released at. GPS, wifi, 3g, soon to be Froyo android, 5" screen and 10mm depth. If you can face the sheer size it look like its going to be awesome.

Also the mac dev conference on Monday (?) which should see the release of OS4. The leaked iphone 4 pics do look good as well.

And as said above, ive yet to meet someone who doesnt like their Desire.

I like my Droid but the Evo is out on Friday and thats the next big one.

We arent getting the Evo over here, ever apparently.

HTC say its something to do with us not getting 4G coverage or some such excuse.

Evo will need a GSM version as the US release version is actually CDMA I believe, with WiMAX as the "4G" element.  As I understand it they have taken the HD2, put a CDMA Capable chip it in it rather than GSM, and then slapped Android in place of Windows Mobile.  Itll still work as a 2G phone over here, but that pretty much defeats the point!

Wife has a HD2 that she replaced her iPhone with and loves it.  Not QUITE as nice to browse on, but otherwise more useful and less annoying to use over multiple PCs.  Also the proliferation of MicroUSB cables around out house means she doesnt have to go hunting for a cable when she wants to sync the phone up, or use it as a USB stick.

I was playing with a Dell Streak Engineering Sample for most of last week.  Stunning thing, but the drawbacks are its a little on the large side, and its running Android 1.6.  Still a brilliant thing, but the size more than anything else counts against it.

The Desire is cool, though I know some people dont like it.

MicroUSB, because MiniUSB wasnt quite small enough

I doubt its CDMA since its on Sprint and its Verizon who run CDMA

Nokia N8 is out in a few months if not sooner going on the rumours.
Iphone 4 / HD will be announced next week and probably out soon after if not straight the way.

The successor to the motorola droid is months away and HTC have their new flag sheep android out in just a few months as well.

I would wait, lots of cool choice very soon!

Whichever Android you get, go to http://android.modaco.com
Paul on there will pretty much root any phone usually before they are released, so you can install a very robust recovery partition and one of his highly optimised roms.

And for those with a desire, its essentially an N1.....Which there is a complete Froyo image out there for :D

Both Verizon and Sprint use CDMA networks, while AT&T and T-Mobile are the USAs main GSM carriers.  Its why we didnt get the Blackberry Tour over here, while its available on Verizon and Sprint in the USA.  We had to a wait a little for the 9700 to come out.

Sam

Hmm I didnt know Sprint was CDMA as well.

Thats the thing...with my old X1, it was so poor in every way that I felt the need to root the rom and tweak it to get every little last bit of performance out of it.

With the desire, everything has worked out of the box. I have no desire (sorry) or need to root it. I am perfectly happy waiting a few weeks for the proper android 2.2 update to hit the desire and will update then!

Its not like the old windows mobile way, HTC cant optimise roms to save their lifes.  Even Rosie/Sense is very poor in stock form.
Upgrading to an MCR Rom, would leave your phone looking the same but a hell of a lot faster.  Latest official Android kernels to iron out any little bugs, add features etc.
