from the Avensis 1.8 GLS to the 2.0 SR and letting the missus have the GLS (bearing in mind she needs something new one way or the other).

Its very tempting as I do like the 3 series - but Ive heard some right horror stories on repair costs and and such when they have issues....

I am looking at the 2.0l Diesel Focus 02 plate (nicer shape). Can get quite a nice one for a grand and the interiors seem nicer than the Avensis.

Too much choice lol!

Is that a TDCI version or the TDDI? Cause if I were you I wouldnt bother getting a TDDI focus.

I would also consider a Skoda or Seat if you can find a diesel, as we all know they use the VW engines, but due to them wearing the wrong badges they sell for less than the Golf.

I can also recommend the Astra CDTI, i drive one at work and put about 5k a month on it, its done 190k now and is motoring strong :)

My last company car was a 1.9 TDI Octavia. I was very surprised by how a) comfortable b) well designed and c) fast it was. The turbo is great, the ride is soft, fuel consumption I averaged at 40MPG. The higher diesel model (cant remember what it is called - think it has an R in it) my mate raves on about all the time. Definately worth considering.

If you do choose an Octavia, look for ex-company cars. They were very popular as company cars and are usually sold with under 30k on the clock and having been driven sensibly for only 3 years. I believe they use auction prices to estimate what the car is sold on at after the lease ends, which should be a steal on a Skoda...

He wont get a VRS for the sort of cash he is spending.

Been keeping an eye on prices recently myself (which we know are higher due to the scrappage scheme), the Ford and Vauxhalls are still by far the best priced and most popular diesels, VW are plenty around but mostly high mileage at the lower end of the market, Skoda and Seat diesel do sometimes come up for good money but they are not as plentiful as the alternatives so you might be waiting a while. I wont include anything french in the lower end market, Peugeot 307s i do have a soft spot for, having owned 2, but ive had plenty of issues with them.
